Client Side Customisation of Web Pages

This assignment is designed to enable you to satisfy the following unit criteria:

P1 / describe three implementation styles of CSS, showing how they are called from HTML
P2 / describe the features of the box model for CSS and describe the selectors and how they are used
P3 / describe the main features of the chosen scripting language and outline some typical uses
P4 / design, create and test web pages using CSS to control layout
P5 / design, create and test web pages using scripts to implement interactivity.
M1 / compare two methods of accessing external CSS script
M2 / clarify, with examples, the differences in implementation of two aspects of CSS
M3 / explain how web pages using scripts are implemented in two different browsers.
D1 / change the layout of a web page by changing the external CSS
D2 / show how existing interactivity could be extended or additional interactivity introduced into a web page
D3 / evaluate the impact of using CSS to control layout.

Scenario

Working for a local web design company, you have been approached by a reputable company in the area enquiring about the possibility of having an interactive website created to support their on-line business. They have an existing site which has little or no interactivity and is used mainly as an advertising tool. It has also been suggested that their existing site does not meet accessibility standards which means they are also cutting out a large proportion of potential customers who may find their site difficult to use.

Before you can accept this contract of work you need to run the proposal past your manager and provide him with a clear understanding of the nature, purpose and requirements of the proposed site. The client is keen to get this site up and running as soon as possible to eliminate any come back on the accessibility issues involved with their existing site.

Task 1 – CSS Styles (P1, P2, M1 and M2)

Your client is keen to meet the accessibility standards set out by the W3C. Before he decides to go ahead with this project he would like to describe the following:

a.  Three implementation style of CSS and how it is called from HTML.

b.  The features of the box model for CSS and selectors and how to use them.

c.  Describe, with examples the differences in implementations of two aspects of CSS

d.  A comparison of two methods of accessing external CSS scripts

Task 2 – Scripting Language (P3, M3)

Your client seems satisfied with your initial design and proposal, but would like to know more about JavaScript and how it could enhance the web site. Write a brief report providing your client with a clear understanding of the following:

  1. The main features of JavaScript and some of its uses.
  2. How the scripting language is implanted in two different browsers

Task 3 – Create and Test WebPages (P4, P5, D1)

  1. Prepare a proposal for your manager informing him of the nature, purpose and initial requirements of the website. Your proposal should include the following:

a.  Screen design

b.  Navigation Diagram

c.  Customisation using

·  CSS to control layout

·  JavaScript to implement interactivity

  1. Based on your proposal and design, create and test your client’s website using CSS to control layout and JavaScript to implement interactivity.

a.  Document your work

b.  Provide comments in your code to show your understanding

c.  Provide evidence of client review and implement changes to design by changing the external CSS

d.  Show evidence of testing the final website. This should include

·  Errors and problems that occur and how issues have been resolved.

·  Testing in at least two browsers to show compatibility

Task 4 – Evaluation (D2, D3)

  1. Evaluate the impact of using CSS to control the layout of your clients web pages by using suitable examples you implemented in your website.
  2. Show how the site could be improved by extending existing or additional interactivity.
