This course will give you the basic technical skills and knowledge you'll need for a career in the aeronautical engineering sector.

This course is ideal for school leavers wishing to pursue a potential career in aircraft maintenance.

Course Content

Your studies will be formed of units that fall into the following subject areas:

  • Maths for Technicians
  • The Physics of Aviation
  • Aircraft Mechanical Systems
  • Aircraft Avionic and Electrical Systems
  • Aircraft Gas Turbine engines
  • Workshop handskills
  • On Aircraft activities

Entry Requirements

  • Five GCSEs (Grades A to C) or equivalent at pass level including Mathematics, English Language and a Science (Physics/Chemistry).
  • You will also be required to attend an interview and successfully pass an entrance exam based on maths, physics and common logic.
  • Satisfactory completion of the school induction programme.

If English is not your first language, you will also need an IELTS score of 5.5 or above.

Learning Methods

You will learn through:

  • Formal theoretical sessions
  • Classroom and hangar based activities
  • Laboratory, workshop and on aircraft activities
  • Visits to areas of vocational interest
  • Workbooks and research projects

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed through written assignments and controlled assessments.

Your performance during practical tasks and activities will also be assessed.

Qualifications Gained

If you successfully complete the course you will gain a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering awarded by Edexcel.

Progression Opportunities

If you successfully complete the course with the required number of UCAS points you could progress to the Newcastle College FdEng Aerospace Engineering course or the Kingston University partnered BSc Aircraft Engineering Course at the Newcastle Aviation Academy.

Course Costs

16 to 18s

Tuition is free for learners aged 16 to 18 with the exception of full-cost courses which are not eligible for fee reductions. A learner will continue to qualify for free tuition for the duration of their qualification; this includes Year 2 of a qualification if the learner was aged 16-18 when they started in Year 1. Additional financial support may also be available for full-time learners, please call our Student Services team on 0191 200 4000 for more information.

Additional Course Costs

You will require suitable safety boots and overalls for the practical and on aircraft instructional sessions. You will have to pay for these at your own cost.

You will normally also have to pay for course items such as stationery, books and other equipment. There will also be placements or visits to sites of vocational interest which may also have contributory costs attached.
