INSTRUCTIONS FOR RESEARCH GRANT APPLICATION

The goal of the Bryon Riesch Paralysis Foundation is to provide grants to fund research in the hopes of finding a cure for paralysis. Applications for research grants are accepted from American investigators located at institutions that have established lines of accountability and fiscal responsibility. The intent of these grants is to promote new and exciting research in the field of paralysis. The amount of grant money distributed is pre-determined by the Bryon Riesch Paralysis Foundation (BRPF) Board of Directors. The following areas of research are of primary interest to the Bryon Riesch Paralysis Foundation:

- Factors relating to re-myelination, axonal preservation or growth, and cell differentiation that may lead to acute or chronic recovery in spinal cord injured individuals.

- Drug therapies or other interventions that would limit secondary damage after a spinal cord injury.

- Activities that investigate underlying problems associated with neurological disorders such as spasticity, chronic pain, bladder/bowel function, or sexual function.

The next deadline for applications is December15, 2017. Applicants receiving grants will be notified by February 23, 2018. Written reviews will not be provided.

Research Grantee Responsibilities:

1.The grant provided is good for one-year periods and may be renewed at the discretion of the BRPF.

2. The grant amount will be based upon availability of BRPF funds and will be determined by the Foundation.

3.Grantees must provide BRPF with narrative and financial reports of progress 6 months into the projects and 30-60 days after the one-year period has ended.

4. The principal investigator is responsible for sharing all publications related to the project with BRPF during and after the one-year period.

5.Bryon Riesch Paralysis Foundation expects to be recognized as a financial contributor in publications and presentations regarding the project.

6.Due to the size and 501(c)3 status of our organization, overhead costs will not be covered.

Funding Limitations:

1. Requests to purchase major items of equipment are discouraged.

2. Funding for the principal investigator’s salary is discouraged unless the application is for a post-doctoral fellowship.

Instructions for Application:

The following instructions are supplied for clarification of some application items.

1.Title of Research: A brief, descriptive title.

2.Principal Investigator: Name of PI and the name of co-investigator if applicable

2a.Title: Title and Degrees of PI and co-investigator if applicable.

2b.Principal Investigator: Present Appointment: Indicate the position that is most applicable to the proposed research.

2h.Signature of Principal Investigator: Signature signifies that the PI has read and agrees to the BRPF’s Guidelines.

3.Fiscal Officer: Person at host institution responsible for fiscal reports.

4.Contract Officer: Person at host institution to whom the contract is sent.

5.Check payable to: Payable to what entity?

15a.Personnel: Please list all personnel and titles working on the project, the % of their time allocated for this project and their salary.

15b.Equipment: Equipment purchases are not encouraged. Fully justify any equipment purchases.

15c.Animals and supplies: Please itemize purchases over $1000.

16.Non-technical Abstract: Please in lay terms describe the research project and expected results.

17.Key Words: Include 3-5 key words.

18.Relationship to BRPF priorities: Please in lay language describe how your project relates to the BRPF priorities listed under paragraph one in the instructions.

19.Narrative: Describe: 1) the specific objectives of the project and hypothesis 2) the prior research/theory behind the project 3) the methods and experimental design 4) equipment/facilities to be used.
