The May 10th butterfly meeting will feature "MemberGarden Presentations" by Jan Lowenthal and Lori Parrish. Both gardens will provide members with many ideas. There will be a tour of their gardens on Saturday, May 12th, followed by snacks at Lori's house. Bring your cameras and notebooks! Directions will be emailed separately. Parking at Jan's is a vacant lot, across from her house.

Lori Parrish has suggested a very useful resource for Florida plant identification: It’s a great online resource with pictures, many details. It may be printed out.

Volunteers Needed:Saturday, May 5 from 9am to 1pm, at Plantation Heritage Park for restoration of Anne Kolb Memorial Trail to hand-remove unwanted vegetation from trail & replace it with native species. Bring hat, gloves, shovels, etc, sunscreen, insect repellent, & drinking water. No equipment will be provided. Parking is provided at the park’s main building, where you can complete the necessary paperwork at the office and receive a list of do’s and don’ts before being directed to the work location.

Broward CountyPlant Affair. Looking for some plants to spruce up your home landscape? This annual event on May 5 & 6 at Plantation Heritage Park in Plantation will have a plant show & sale with up to 30 vendors. Food & beverages will be available for purchase. Hours: 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. both days. For info call the park at 954-357-5135.

Marc Minno will be the guest speaker on Sunday, May 6th at the Miami Blue’s quarterly meeting. Marc will be speaking about the Pink-spot Sulphur, including updates on their distribution, thoughts on host plants, identification tips etc.

He is the author of: Florida Butterfly Gardening: A Complete Guide To Attracting, Identifying, And Enjoying Butterflies, Florida Butterfly Caterpillars And Their Host Plants, Butterflies of Southeast Florida: A Guide to Common and Notable Species and a co-author of several other Florida butterfly books.

The meeting will be held at SimpsonPark, easy to reach from I-95/ Rickenbacker exit. This should make Marc’s program fairly accessible to Broward and even Palm Beach NABA members, since the Pink-spot Sulphur is of importance north of Miami-Dade.

SimpsonPark is a small gem with a charming building and a wonderful hammock. It’s also close to Virginia Key, and even Bill Baggs/Cape Florida State Park, if someone wanted to visit one of those sites in the morning before the program. The program will start, as usual, at 1:00 pm, with snacking and enjoying the hammock from noon on.

Request for assistance from Girl Scout Troop 10610 to assist them with creating a butterfly garden by next year at FIACharterSchool in Davie. If anyone has donations or other resources, people’s expertise and/or materials, please contact MichelleShore at The Troop Leaders want the garden to be an educational opportunity for teachers & for the Girl Scouts to create the garden.

Speaker requestfor “nature” program for the city of Coconut Creek youth. To speak to the participants during the summer program (on one of the Saturdays, June 9-July 14, 2012) about the environment/Butterflies (if possible a show and tell type presentation).
