Who we are...

Brockville and District Association for Community Involvement (BDACI) has a firm and unwavering vison that people with an intellectual disability and their families will enjoy a full and meaningful life in and within the community.

Originally founded in 1956 by parents and family members, BDACI has been instrumental in developing a range of supports for families to assist their member with a disability.

In 1985, BDACI transferred its residential services to a purposefully created corporation so BDACI could focus its efforts towards advocacy and on individual and family support. The organization dedicated itself to providing Family Support (services, resources, and other types of assistance) that enhance the capacity of the whole family to care for one another and to sustain and/or enhance their valued social roles as family members and as members of the community.

The organization has a history of self-reflection and analysis as a tool for staying true to our mission, values and philosophy. BDACI has engaged in a number of organizational reviews and is now in the process of decision making regarding implementation of a new service direction. We have a commitment to change and grow as our understanding of family support and Social Role Valorization implementation grows.

BDACI engages in strong advocacy on issues affecting people with disabilities. BDACI is involved with initiatives that promote and protect the rights and interests of people who have a disability and their families. Local, provincial and national issues are vigorously addressed including better schooling, employment, funding for personal support, accessibility, the right to life, concerns about euthanasia and assisted suicide, supported decision making and many others. BDACI also supports an active People First organization.

We assist a small number of adults who have their own homes with the personal assistance to be able to do so in concert with a network of supporters. To this end we created a separate incorporated but linked non-profit housing corporation called Community Involvement Legacy Homes (CILH) to own and manage a few properties on behalf of the people who live in these homes.

We provide individualized personal support which strengthens families and enables people who have a disability to acquire and maintain valued social roles. Understanding and developing valued social roles as described by Social Role Valorization theoryunderpins the work and mission of BDACI.Currently,BDACI supports over one hundred and fifty families throughout the stages of life.

In addition toten (10) core staff that assist people and families to plan, administer and coordinate personal supportBDACI employs approximately 75full and part time support workers. The organizationis a member agency of the United Way of Leeds and Grenville. BDACI is a transfer payment agency for the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, Ministry of Child & Youth Services and Ministry of Community and Social Services. The operational budget is about $3M.
