BRISTOL WATER FISHERY REPORTS

31st May – 6th June2013

TOTAL FISH TAKEN TO DATE22,418

Weather:Spring finally arrived on Friday 31st Mayand the past week has seen bright conditions with light to moderate north winds. At times these northerly winds have made fishing awkward on exposed areas of the lakes. Evening sport has been superb but ideally flat, calm conditions are needed to see the best of the surface activity.

Water:All the lakes remain very clear. The very first signs of a little weed growth in places. Water temperatures have risen quickly in the past seven days with the temperature now at 18 ºC.

CHEW VALLEY For the first few days of the week anglers found catching tricky at Chew, but in the past couple of days anglers have managed to achieve increased rod averages despite the continued bright and breezy weather.Floating line and nymph tactics are still working around the margins and the shallow water areas with Herons, Moreton and Stratford the best areas for specimen hunting.Success can be found fishing sunk lines with blobs/boobies in deeper water off Walley, Woodford and down through the middle of Herons Anglers fished the evening league (floating line only) on Tuesday and despite the strong breeze and bright sunshine the competitors managed a very respectable 64 trout to 20 anglers in a 3.5 hour sessions. No fish have been stocked for a fortnight now and many of the fish being caught are over 3lb, with 4lb and 5lb fish common. The size of the fish reflects in the average weight for the week which has crept up to 2lb 13oz. We will be stocking again next week while there is a gap in the competition calendar and it likely a further 1500 rainbows will be added.

Catch this week: 1812fish to 438 rods, a rod average of 4.13at an average weight 2.13.

Catch to date:10399 fish to 2196rods, a rod average of 4.73 at an average weight of 2.12

BLAGDONFishing continues to be excellent on Blagdon from both boat and bank. The late evening has seen some excellent surface activity in shallow waterspots such as Wood Bay, Holt Bay, Polish Water and Cheddar Water. Larger fish are being caught from boat and bank at Top End and anglers are now wading out along Rugmoor to target these brutes. Fly life is abundant on Blagdon with buzzers, caseless caddis larvae, corixa and snail featuring on the menu. More stocking took place this week with an additional 1600 rainbows added. Boats anglers can expect to find fish all around the lake but Pipe, Home and Holt Bays have been particularly good the past couple of days. The weed cutting boat has now been deployed on Blagdon and we will strive to keep on top of any excessive weed growth.

Catch this week:1391fish to 343 rods, a rod average of 4.05 at an average weight 2.10

Catch to date:9968fish to 2303rods, a rod average of 4.32 at an average weight 2.10.

BARROWSBest results seem to have been to those using the smallest and lightest of dries and buzzers with late evening being the prime time. Late on Tuesday evening a stunning 8lb 2oz rainbow trout was captured by Kenny Lacey from Barrow No. 2 on a damsel pattern. This is a superb fish for the tanks and we are certain that nothing that size has been added this year. An additional 270 rainbows were stocked in each tank this week.

Catch this week: 372 fish to 142 rods, a rod average of 2.62 at an average weight 1.11

Catch to date: 2051fish to 730 rods, a rod average of 2.8 at an average weight of 1.10

After meeting with the engineers at Barrow we have been informed that we will not be able to stock or fish Barrow 3 for the remainder of this season. The works being done has overrun the planned finish date and the level will remain very low until September. While this situation continues we cannot stock the lake or allow anglers access on to the shores on health & safety grounds.

The winners of the weekly draw this week are Ian Dixon (Bristol) and Philip Robinson of Wigpool. They each win a complimentary boat for two.
