BRISTOL MEDIATION

Background

Bristol Mediation (BM) was one of the first community mediation organisations to develop in the UK, starting in 1987 after the St Paul’s riots in the city. Over the past 28 years BM has provided a neighbour dispute conflict resolution service; undertaken outreach work in communities; introduced peer mediation in a number of schools, published a peer mediation manual; run a domestic noise counselling service; worked with young offenders mediating between them and those offended against; worked with young people in the care system; worked in partnership to reduce ASB and street conflict working with young people and their families across the city, provided restorative approaches to help road users gain greater understanding of others issues and trained hundredsof volunteers to be mediators - some who still work with us and others who have gone off and become nationally and internationally known for their conflict resolution work.

Our current involvement is working with neighbour/community disputes in Bristol and the surrounding areas of which we have a secure contract until 2018 to provide conflict resolution services across the city of Bristol. We also provideconflict resolution servicesto housing association tenants; work as part of amulti-agency project on preventing evictions from hostels, supported housing or peoples family home;and provide mediation and conflict awareness training; We provide Restorative Justice Services in South Gloucestershire and BANES. This is a partnership (with SARI (Stand against Racism and Inequality) and NJP (Neighbourhood Justice Project) with us as the lead agency providing restorative approaches across the area in cases where there is criminal activity.

BM is staffed by a team of paid workers with 45 volunteer conflict resolution practitioners and 13 volunteer RJ practitioners. Our volunteers are a key resource for the organisation and out in the community and provide community conflict resolution services, RJ in a Criminal Justice Setting, all of which are supported by our Director.
