Brighton High PTSA Minutes

January 6, 2016

Attendance: Katie Tatton, Cindy Hanson, Cheryl Harrison, Kristin Dickerson, Calandra Crowley

Welcome: Katie

Approval of minutes from November 2015 meeting

Student Report: Calandra Crowley was welcomed and we talked about Students’ Choice and You Got Caught Awards. She will think about if these are the best way to fit student needs or if there is a more effective way.

Special Guest Julie Schwartz from National Alliance on Mental Illness was unable to meet with us today. We hope to reschedule for next month.

President’s Report:

$400 was donated to the SBO fundraiser ($100 in honor of each grade). SBOs were not present to accept the check, so it was left in the care of Susan Stanley in the office immediately following the meeting.

Nominating Committee: Lois Kristensen and Misty Herbstritt have agreed to be on the committee. One member is still needed. Katie has emailed potential members several times but not heard back. She will call them this week.

Fight the New Drug assembly. Info was passed on to us by Canyons School District and given to Ms. Hanson at the meeting. She will present the information to the committee looking for potential ARC night ideas.

Google is not letting us send bulk emails, so Katie set up a Google Groups account. Invitations are not being accepted by parents. Currently over 600 invitations have been sent, but fewer than 70 members have joined at present. We may need to look into paying for bulk email system for next year. We will look into linking to the Google Groups on the PTSA page on BHS’s website.

Treasurer’s Report:

+$58 Sales tax refund

-$100 Dessert for teacher holiday lunch

-$10 Carnival supplies

-$59 decorations for teacher holiday lunch

Teacher’s Report: We have a new teacher rep this trimester: Courney Nielsen, absent due to illness.

Administrative Report: BHS Accreditation March 10-11. Contact Ms. Hanson if you’re interested in being on the parent committee. Accreditation ranking sheets will be reported at our next meeting.

Programs:

Reflections: Just one entry this year, down from 5 last year. The winner was given a $100 gift card. We will likely forgo sponsoring the event next year and use the money to benefit more students. If we decide to continue the program, Ms. Hanson suggests we meet with teachers at the first faculty meeting and ask for their support in getting students to submit entries.

Battle of the Bands: Despite Cheryl’s efforts, no bands have expressed interest in competing.

Hope Squad: Tabled until NAMI presenter can meet with us.

Teacher Holiday Social was appreciated and went well. Large package of plastic table covering was exactly enough. Navy and silver are the best colors to use as some other covers seem thin and transparent. Decorations (small greenery and wide ribbons) were purchased and will be kept for reuse in PTSA closet. Katie will send a thank you note to The Cookie Jar, _+company we used to provide desserts. They provided enough varied desserts for 110 people but we were only charged $100.

PTC Dinner- January 14. Katie emailed Jenni Weichers but has not heard back and will call her to make sure everything is going well.

PTA Day at the Capitol is next month. Cheryl will talk to government teachers to see if there is interest in taking students up for that.
