Brief History of Cloughbawn GAA Club.

Cloughbawn, founded in 1918 to cater for the whole of the parish, tasted its first real success in 1935 when defeating Adamstown in Junior Hurling Final. Played intermediate the following year and lost in county final to Ferns. Won Junior again in 1946 beating Horeswood and claimed the Senior Hurling title in 1949 and ’51, beating Rathnure and Horeswood respectively. Won Junior again in 1972 and Intermediate title in 1973. Won Junior A in 1980 but it wasn’t till 1993 that the next Senior Hurling honours came to Cloughbawn, beating Rapparees in a replay. Cloughbawn reached the S.H. county final last in 2002 and were beaten in co. semi final in 2009 & 2011. Reached senior hurling co final again in 2016, but were beaten by Oulart/The Ballagh by 1 goal.

The club’s first adult football title finally arrived in 2004 when we won Junior A honours defeating Rathnure in final. The club presently compete at Intermediate A level in football in the county and narrowly lost county final in 2013 to Kilmore and lost co final this year, 2016, by a single point to Duffry Rovers.

The year 2012 saw Cloughbawn crowned as Guinness World record holders for 24 hour hurling marathon where 46 club players courageously created history and it was a truly great day for the club. The record still stands!

Our club has provided many great players to County Wexford teams through the years, most notable being Tim Flood who won 3 All-Ireland medals, 1955, ’56 and ’60, while his son Sean figured on the 1996 winning team along with Larry Murphy. Our present representatives at senior hurling level with Wexford are Harry Kehoe, while Colm Kehoe is our rep. on county football team.

Coiste na nÓg committee look after under age affairs with present structure in place since 1992 while the Camogie club was reformed in same year and has gone from strength to strength since now playing at Intermediate level

Our forthnightly club lotto draw has been our mainstay in servicing our club development loans for over 20 years and must continue to be fully supported.

Club development has been ongoing since getting our own pitch in Castleboro in 1975 and facilities include 4 dressing rooms with excellent shower rooms, 2 full size pitches, floodlights, hurling wall, walking track and large fuction room. In 2013 the club members produced and launched its 5 year development plan and we look forward to being the best we can be by 2018 – our club’s 100th year’sanniversary.
