- Discussion
- Grade 5 Fundraising for graduation trip.
- 47 students signed up so far. Trip cost = $295/student
- Fund raising ideas:
- Gift card
- Board game or book swap
- Take one of the remaining 6 pizza days directed toward the grade 5s – they’d help serve and pour juice (typically raise ~$550 raised)
- School fund used for those who can’t afford it on a case by case basis (and done discretely). Typically about $300-$700/year out of school budget used.
- Walk-a-thon
- Adopt a stuffed pet
- Dance-a-thon
- Raffle (tie it in with the spring concert). Baskets can be donated.
- Sell coffee at parent teacher interviews or spring concert
- Jodi & Michelle to meet with grade 5 teachers to down select the fundraiser.
- the grade 5 students will “own” the fundraiser
- Treasurer’s report
- Current balance (Jan 11, 2015) ~ $17000
- Have received 3 requests for money this year:
- $240 for Kindergarten welcome bags (cost $6 each)

- $212.80 for facility rental - All grades Skating (11 March 15)

- Intensive reading program ($600) (Early Reading Intervention – ERI)
- Mrs. Stafford read email from SK parent praising the Intensive reading program
- Need 48 new books per kindergarten room, approximately $6/book neededand will be ordered immediately

- Play day and gymnastics equipment, but usually get a discount
- Some funding was provided last year.

- Need to replace technology cart (grades 3, 4, 5)
- Could buy the existing cart and netbooks off lease, but the netbooks are not very good and have no warranty
- Looking at getting 30 Chromebooks computers at $300 each
- 3-5yr warranty + in-house support through the school board
- For use with Googledocs

- More and more classrooms want them
- TDSB has 2 new products available: $1100 short throw projector with board (2 classrooms 1 & 8), or $361 board (rm 7 already has projector)

- Classroom library / games (initially asking for $1600)
- Parent comment: recommend the game Spot-It ($9/tin)
- Parent contribution – send note to parents to look for donations (new or used) for any grade level

- Boys basketball Feb 20th first tournament
- Ice hockey – coed March for first tournament
- Folk Dancing Club – coed – Folk Dance Jamboree in spring
- Forest of Reading – 110 students signed up for Silver Birch
- Blue Spruce – junior students
- Skating day March 11th
- Choir – grade 1 and 2 students – Little Red Hen
- 8 or 9 lead parts (per audition). All students to participate as chorus
- Gymnastics to begin – grades 1-5
- Annual Sweater Day (wacky and creative) Feb 10th
- Heat turned down
- Hot chocolate provided
- Stomp – Rythmworks Presentation – message was about the importance of hard work
- Pancake Day – Tuesday, Feb 17th
- Need volunteers (8am to 10am)
- Nut free pancakes & utensils
- Need to change pizza day (currently coincides)
- Principals report
- Report cards to be sent home Tuesday Feb 10th
- Interviews to be held Thurs night and Fri morning (Feb12th, 13th)
- Grad Trip Jun 15-17th (have 47 students signed up, usually get 3-4 late arrivals)
- Extended French info session was held last Monday
- Deadline is Jan 29th to apply
- Guaranteed to be offered a spot if apply before deadline (but not guaranteed location)
- Holiday concert was held last December
- Joint with BCCC (daycare) worked out well
- Absenteeism
- Numbers have increased over last 4 years
- 36 students have been out for extended vacations (1 week +) this school year
- French students excused after 15 absences, then need to test to be re-admitted
- School improvement planning
- Briarcrest (and province/city) math numbers went down
- Found that number sense and patterning need more work
- Starting a math boot camp (after interviews)
- grade 3, 4, 5 to focus on multiplication and division
- grade 1, 2 to focus on add and subtraction
- Mental health – self regulation
- Students struggle with this more than any other Learning Skill
- The better a child can regulate themselves, the better they can “rise to the challenge”
- Ability to stay calmly focussed and alert
- Need to down and up regulate
- Not to be confused with compliance
- Teachers will give students some strategies for down and up regulating
- School Safety
- Ongoing discussions about drop off area (with city and police)
- Denied crossing guard
- Working with city to create a no stopping area in between the plaza entrances/exits
- 10 minute stopping area ahead of bus zone
- Positive post-it notes
- Helping kids to feel included
- Working on grant with parent for trees (Majesta Grant) & Working with superintendent for benches and big rocks to create a “buddy bench” for kids who are looking for someone different/new to play with
- Commemoration piece of Canadian flag with piece of shrapnel from Ortona was received by the Canadian Veterans.
- Mrs. Stafford would like to pass this around the schools
- Want to do a Sick Kids fundraiser and one for autism
- Sick Kids video featuring Amrita was shown

- Looking for someone to start to shadow Michelle and Christine allowing for a gradual handover of responsibilities
- School safety
- Thank-you to the teachers for kiss and ride
- Cross walk survey was conducted by police. Can send letters to the police via Stephen Holyday (city councillor)
- Parking lot has become unsafe again.
