Regular attendanceby every studentis mandatory:

theState ofNorthCarolinarequires thatevery child

intheStatebetweentheages ofseven(or younger if enrolled)and16yearsattendschool. Parentsor legal guardians havetheresponsibilityfor ensuring thatstudentsattendandremain atschooldaily. Accuraterecordsofattendance arekept by school officials.

Attendance Standard

A studentmust attendschool50percent ofthe schoolday inorder tobecounted presentfor the entire day.

Students must beinschool at least half the schooldayto be allowed to participatein or attend any after-schoolactivity or evening activitythat day. This includespracticefor athleticteams. A studentmust stayat schooluntil 11:50am ormust arriveat schoolby11:50 am in orderto be countedpresentfor theday. Ifa student leavesthen returns,he/shemust doso within 3½ hours.

Unexcused Absences

InaccordancewiththeCompulsory Attendance Law andtheattendanceregulationsadoptedby the StateBoard ofEducation, an unexcusedabsence (sometimes referredtoas unlawfulabsence) is any absencefor anypurposeother thanthoselisted above. Thefollowingare examples ofunexcused absences:

4. Lackofcleanclothes,shoes,etc

5. Car/trafficproblems

ExcessiveAbsences

1.Compulsory Attendance Law Reporting:

The principal willnotifyparentsandtakeallother steps requiredby G.S.115C-378 forexcessive

absences.

a.Afterastudenthas accumulated threeunlawful absences,theprincipalor his/her designeeshall notifytheparent/guardianofthechild’s excessive absences.

b.Afterastudenthas accumulatedsix unlawful absences,theprincipal shall notifythe parent/guardianthathe/shemay beinviolationofthe Compulsory AttendanceLaw andmaybeprosecuted if theabsences cannotbejustifiedunderthe establishedattendancepolicies ofthestateandthe boardofeducation.

c. After tenaccumulated unlawful absences ina school year, theprincipal shallreview any reportsto or investigationsproducedby theschool social worker pursuantto G.S.115C-381.

Middle SchoolAttendance Policy/Makeup time

Make-up work

Studentswillberesponsiblefor makingupmissed assignments.Ifastudentisabsenthe/shewill have threeschooldaystomakeupmissedwork. Ifan extended absence occurs studentwillwork with the teacher todeterminedue date.

Perfect Attendance Qualifications(forrecognition)

Tobe eligible forPerfectAttendanceinmiddle schoolastudentmustnot miss a fulldayofschool (unlessit is aschool approved activity/field trip)or havemore than10tardies/early dismissals. For studentsthattransfer duringtheschool year, attendancewill beverifiedwith theprevious school.

SchoolRelated Activities/Field Trips

School-related activitiesmust beapprovedin advanceby the principal. Thefollowingschool- relatedactivitieswillnotbecountedas absences from either classor school: fieldtrips sponsoredby theschool; school-initiatedandscheduled

activities; athleticeventsrequiringearly dismissal from school;or in-school suspension.

ScheduledFieldTripsrequire parental permission. Studentswhohavebeensuspended

from school3 or moredaysmay berequiredtohave theirparentsaccompany them. Any studenton

academic probation,or has3 or moredays OSS,or has 10 or moreunexcusedabsences will notbe allowedtoparticipateinfield trips.

Assignmentsmissed forthesereasons will be

completed by students.Theteacher willdetermine whenwork is tobemadeup.Thestudentis responsible for findingoutwhatassignments aredue andcompletingthemwithinthespecifiedtime

period.

SCHOOL POLICIESPROCEDURES

Student Arrivaland Departure:

Studentsare expectedtoarrive atschoolbetween

7:45AM and8:05AM. Studentsarrivingbefore8:05

AM will report directly to thegym or cafeteria. Students are notpermittedtogototheir lockers or classrooms until 8:05.School willdismiss at3:25PM. Ifaparent calls duringthedaytorequesttheirchildtobeacar rider or bus rider, we will informthestudentsatthe endofthedayduringafternoonannouncements.

Students arrivingby automobile are tobeletout as quickly andsafely aspossible atthecar rider drop area.Intheafternoon,parentsshouldpullup tothe designatedspot,turn thecar off,andwait for

dismissal. Car riders departingintheafternoon

report to the frontwalkwayofthebuildingandwill be instructedas toloadingprocedures.Nostudentsare tobe droppedofforpickedupon BrawleySchool Road orbehindtheschool.

Students may walk to and from school but must provide a parent permission note to the front office.

TardytoSchool/Class

Studentsmustarrive atschoolby 8:15amor they willbecountedas tardytoschool.Also,students must quickly moveduringclass changesandbein theclassroomwhen thetardy bellrings. Lingeringin hallways andenteringclassrooms latecreate

disruptionstolearning. Five tardies to first period will result inan After School Detentionbeingassigned.

EarlyDismissalfrom School

1.Studentswill becalledtothefrontoffice.Under no circumstances is astudenttoleave thecampus

beforecomingtotheoffice.

2.Theparent/guardianmustcomeintotheofficeand sign thestudentout.Parents are towait intheoffice for their child (ren).Ifsomeoneother than theparent

or theparent'sdesigneeattemptstosignouta student,theparentwillbecontacted.

3.Weask thatparentstry to arrive atregular class changeso thatinstructionwill notbeinterrupted. .

4.LateArrivals &EarlyDismissals:willbemarked as tardiesevenifyour childreturns toschool. Five unexcusedtardieswillequal oneday’s absencefor

attendance purposes.

Visitorsin theBuilding

Parentsor visitors mustreportdirectly tothefront office. Parentsandvisitors must obtainavisitor’s identificationnametagbefore visitingany classroom or areaofthebuilding.

SchoolAccidentsorInjuries

Ifyouare involvedinanaccident or areinjuredin any wayduringschool or atschool-sponsored activities, you aretonotifyyour teacher,coach, orthe officeas soon aspossible. An accidentreportwill be completedandplacedonfileintheoffice.

Lockers

Lockers areprovidedfor theconvenienceof students.Eachstudentwill be assignedalocker at thebeginningofschool. Eachstudentis responsible for thecontents ofhis/herassigned locker. Students are requiredtokeeplockers closedandlockedwhen notinuse. Studentsare required torenta

combinationlockfor $5.00.This lock will bereturned to theschool attheendoftheyear. Ifthelock is lost, studentswillberequired to buy areplacement.For protection,nostudentshould givehis/her

combinationtoany other student,nor shouldhe/she allow another studenttokeepanythinginhis/her locker.

Theprincipal,by law, hastheauthorityto examine thecontents ofany locker locatedontheschoolpropertywhenhe/she has sufficientreason tobelievethatillegal items/ substancesor stolen propertymay befound.

Lost and Found

Anypersonal belongingsfoundinthebuilding or on thegrounds shouldbeturnedinto the office. Any studentmissingbelongingsshouldcheck in the

office,thebell tower, or withtheirteacher. However, theschoolisnotresponsible for money,books, clothing, etc.leftunattended.Itis recommended jewelry notbewornonPE daysor leftinthelocker rooms.

BrawleyMiddle Schoolwillnotberesponsible for recovering or obtaining compensationfor lost or stolen property. The schoolwillnot

investigatetheftordamageof personalitems prohibited at school(i.e. cellphones,iPods,MP3 players,and e-readers).

Medication

Allmedicationwill bekeptanddispensed bythe schoolnurse.Allprescriptionmedicationmustbe broughtto theschoolby a parentor guardianand giventothenursewithadoctor's note. School personnel arenot allowedto dispenseanyover the counter medicationevenwith parentpermission.

Cafeteriaand Child Nutrition

Studentsmaypurchasebreakfastandlunchinthe cafeteria eachday orbringtheirlunchfrom

home. Freeandreducedpricedmealsare available tostudentswhomeettherequirements. Application

forms are senthomeatthebeginningoftheyearand

are availableinthe officeuponrequest. Breakfastis$1.35andlunchis $2.65. Milk is

includedinthelunchprice.Supplemental items may alsobepurchasedwithameal. Someofthese supplemental items cancost $1.75individually. You

may alsowishto pay bythemonth! The district also offers on-line prepayment optionsthrougha program calledLunchPrepay. With this service,youmayuse acredit card ordebitcard toputmoneyonyour student(s)account(s)view theirmeal history, andbe notified bye-mailwhentheirbalancedropsbelowa level youhaveset. Visitthesecure site at details or toenroll or you cangoto theChildNutritionwebpagewhichhas the link tothis website. Youmust haveyourStudent’sID number toenroll.

Studentswillbeallowed toovercharge upto$5.00 inthecafeteria. Parentsare welcometocomeand havelunchwithyour child. Becausewearepart of

theFederalLunch Programwecannotallow restaurant foods into the cafeteria. Also foods such ascupcakes,cakes,brownies, etc. are not tobe broughttoschool for other students.Iredell- StatesvilleSchools prohibitshomemadefoodsbeing servedinaclassroomfor an assignmentor atreat.

WIN Program

Competitiveteams andremediationclassesalso meet during thistime.

Promotion/Retention Policy

A studentmustpassatleastthreeofthefour academic classes (math,science,language arts, and social studies) in order to be promotedtothenext gradelevel.Inaddition,studentsare requiredto

pass theendofgrade testsin 8thgradeinmath reading andsciencetobepromoted.Parentswillbe notifiediftheirchildis indanger ofbeingretained.

PhysicalEducation

Studentswillberequired to purchaseaphysical educationuniform(T-shirt andshorts)for$15.00. Youmaywear auniformfroma previous

year. Students should be prepared to dressout each day they are scheduled for physicaleducation.

Studentswhofail to dress three timeswill receive an After School Detention.. Students mustdress outin theirownphysical educationuniform. The school is notresponsiblefor personal items. Wesuggestthatjewelry notbeworn onPEdays.

Allstudentswillberequiredtopurchaseastudent handbookfor$7.50from theirhomeroom teacher. This bookwill bereviewedbyeachteacher and signedby parentswhennecessary. Thesewill be availablefor purchaseduring openhouse,online payment,andduring thefirstweekofschool.

A core teamoffacultymembers are availableto helpcounsel studentsthroughvarious student

problems anddifficulties. Studentsmay self-refer or berecommended byaparent or teacher.

Library/MediaCenter

Studentsandteachersare encouragedtoenjoy theuseof all thelibrary/mediaresources.

may enter thebuildingwhen thesignal is given bythe principal.Ifthe fire alarmrings whenstudents arein thehallways,they shouldleave bythe nearestexit. If astudent pulls thefire alarm,law enforcementwill be

notifiedandthestudentwillreceivea10dayOSS.

Eachyear periodic lockdown and/or other emergencydrills will occur. Studentsmustadhere to theprocessesandremainsilentwheninstructed. Failure tocomply withthe procedureswill result in disciplinary action.

Outerwear

3.Teachersmayuse discretionwhencool temperatures warrant usingouterwear in class.

4.School issuedathleticwarmups can onlybe worn ongamedaysby players.However,team hoodies arestillnot permitted.

Spirit Days

Atleast2daysoutofthemonththeschool willhost Spirit Days inwhichstudents canwear BrawleySpirit Wear thathasbeenpurchased from theschool’s PTSO.

DressDown Days

Onoccasionwewill havedress downdays.On thesedays we followtheIredell-Statesville Schools dress codepolicy with thefollowing exceptions: hoodies,pajamas,spaghettistraps/straplesstops, yoga/spandexpants by themselves (worn under shorts is allowed),jeanswith holes,andclothes withinappropriatemessages will stillnot beallowed.

HairColor

Haircolor mustbeanatural color (brown,black, blonde,andred). Unnaturalcoloringsuchas blue,

purple,pink,etc.isnotpermitted.Beads andfeathers inthehairarealsonotallowed.

Hats and HeadDressings

Hats,caps,toboggans,feathers,scarves, bandannas,dorags,sweatbands,combs, or brushes inhaircannotbeworn inthebuilding.

Jewelryand Ornamentation

1.NOFacial Piercingother than theears is permitted.

2.Any items thatcanbeusedas weapons orany itemthatcausesadisruptioninclass cannotbeworn. (i.e.fishhooks,bracelets ornecklaceswithraised

metal or plastic,jelly bracelets,facial piercing other

Shoes

1. NoFlip Flops oropen-endedshoes.This is to preventinjury.

2. Bedroomstyleshoesandmismatchedshoes are notallowed.

3. Studentsare not allowedtosellor tradeshoeson campus.

DressCodeCompliance

Studentswillbeexpectedtomeet dress code requirements.Failuretocomply with thedress code policy will behandledaccordingtotheschool discipline procedures. Theprocedures areas follows:

1.First dress codeoffense- thestudentwill be asked tochangeandgivenawarning byadministration.

2. Second dress codeoffense- thestudentwillbe askedtochangeintoproperattireandassignedan After School Detention(ASD).

3. Thirddress codeoffense- thestudentwill be askedtochangeintoproperattireandassignedone

dayofIn-SchoolSuspension(ISS).

Chronic failure tocomplywith thedress codewill be treated as insubordination andcouldbepunished with outofschool suspension(OSS).

GracePeriod for New Students

New studentsfromoutside ofIredell-Statesville schools enrollingduringtheschool year willhave5 schooldays inwhichtomeetshirtsandbottomwear requirementsofthedress code. Allother dress code

requirementsmustbemet during the5daygraceperiod.After thattime,thestudentisexpectedtobe infullcompliance. Allrisingandreturningstudents shouldbeincompliancewith theuniformdress code policy theopeningday ofeachschool year.

ACADEMIC POLICY

Brawley MiddleSchool regards academic honestyas vital totheacademic, socialandemotional developmentofallstudents.Honestandethical behavior is anessential componentinthelearning process.Academic honestyrequires thatall

academic work is thelegitimate,truthful effort and productofthestudent.Incontrast,academic dishonestyis anattemptbystudentstoclaimand

show possessionofeffort, knowledgeand/or skills thatare nottheirown. Academic dishonestyinany

formshallnotbepermitted(“Academic Honesty”). AcademicHonestymeans thatstudentsproduce work thatisauthentic andoriginal, withtheideasand

work of othersacknowledgedin proper format.

Studentsare responsiblefor theethicaluseof information,andteachers areresponsiblefor

teachingwhenandhowtocite andreferencesources accurately.Teachers arealsoresponsiblefor

teachingthedifferencebetweencollaborationor group-work andtheunethical useofanother

student’s work thatis represented asoriginalthought. Academic Misconductincludes,butisnotlimitedto,

1.DigitalEthicsand Academic Integrity

Allstudentswillabide bythe ISSSchools Acceptable Use Policy andusetheir devicewith utmostintegrity. SeeAcademic Honesty Policy.

2. DigitalPreparedness

Studentswillbringdeviceand allrelatedtechnology toschool daily. This includes:Laptop,Backpack, Charger,andHeadphones.Theseitems are required for daily instruction.Students are responsible for

theirownlaptops.Laptopsshouldnot beloanedto another student.

3. Computer Misuse in Class

Computer shouldbeusedas instructed bythe teacher atalltimes. Computers shouldnotbea distractionfrom learning.Intentionally accessing inappropriatesites,downloads,games,social media,

chat,etc.will notbepermitted.

Consequence:Teachers will contact parents and follow guidelines under Student Discipline Section C.

4. Transporting/SecuringDevice

Laptopmustbesecuredinstudent’s backpack whennotin useand/or whenchangingclasses. Laptopwill be closedandcarriedappropriately whenmoving locations withintheclassroom. Damageofthe deviceis theresponsibility ofthestudent.

5. Downloaded GamesorAppson Devices Downloadedgamesor appsonyour Laptopwill NOT bepermitted.Only approvedsoftwareor downloadsfromFileWavewill be acceptable.Games/Apps will beremovedby BMS HelpDesk if found.

6. Student Printing

Studentprintingwill notbeallowedinschool.

Students shouldseek alternatemethods ofaccessing andsharingdocuments.

7. Keep food or drinkawayfrom your device at alltimes.

A. Discipline:Oneofthe mostimportantlessons educationteaches isdiscipline. Whileit does not appear asasubject,it underliesthewhole educational structure. Itis the trainingthatdevelops

self-control,character, orderliness, and efficiency.

With anunderstandingofthe purposesofdisciplinein aschool, youmay formacorrect attitudetowardit

andnotonlydoyour part in makingyour school an effective place oflearning, butdevelop thehabitof self-restraintwhichwill makeyouabetter person.

B. RulesofConduct: Every studentshouldstrive to beconsiderateofothers. Makingboisterous noises, slamminglockers, runningin thehalls,markingon

thedesks,walls,floors,andlockers, andtalkingwhile someone elseis speaking are examplesofbehavior thatgoodschool citizens avoid. Strive toshow that you areresponsible.

C. Authority ofAdultSchool Employees:Allofthe adultemployees ofthe Brawley Middle Schoolhave certainresponsibilitiestotheschool; andinorder to carry outtheseresponsibilities,they havecertain authoritytocorrectstudentswhentheneedarises. If any studentis correctedbyany adultemployee, whether theemployeeis faculty,clerical, cafeteria, custodial, busdriver, or substituteteacher,the studentis expectedtoacceptsuchcorrection.
