EFFECTIVE BRAIN STORMING TECHNIQUES

Introduction and grouping

Divide Students into 6 groups by picking papers which has numbers of the activity they will be doing. Once they pick their number, they will go to the table of their number.

ACTIVITIES (30 mins.)

The concept

“MATERIALS”

What is the outcome of the experience?

HOW TO INSPIRE VISITORS TO GET INTERESTED IN CHARACTERISTICS OF MATERIALS?

On your tables you will see a box and a piece of paper explaining what your activity is, these are all ways of coming up with creative ideas and at the end groups will present their ideas briefly.

Questions are welcome…

1. VISUAL BRAINSTORMING

Supplies: Magazines in a box and a paper to stick them on + tape, glue

Activity: As a group build a collage about MATERIALS from images and prepare to explain the significance of the images related to the topic.

Outcome: Visual collages help everyone to understand each other’s perceptions about the concepts and help them verbalize complex or unimagined themes.

2. WORD-CONCEPT ASSOCIATION

Supplies: Large papers and markers

Activity: List down WORDS that comes to mind about MATERIALS and look for commonalities and differences.

Outcome: Clustering the words/perceptions will help to evaluate and prioritize design features and concepts.

3. DRAW THE EXPERIENCE

Supplies: Papers and markers

Activity: Sketching how you perceive “MATERIALS” as a concept will let all members of the team to look at how others perceive the topic. The commonalities or contrasts might help to pursue on an exhibit idea.

Outcome: To articulate and visualize interaction design concepts which might help developing ideas of what visitors could do.

Supplies: Description and props in a box

4. ROLE PLAYING

Activity: Determine the Stakeholders (people who might be interacting with this exhibit) and assign these roles to the team members.

Act out roles with or without props focusing on the intuitive responses prompted by interacting with an exhibit about MATERIALS.

Outcome: To understand the expectations of different users and behaviour based concepts.

5. 101 IDEAS

Supplies: Papers and pens

Activity: Write down as many ideas as possible for an interactive MATERIALS exhibit until you reach 101 ideas. Which one is most interesting sounding.

Outcome: To pass the limits of easy ideas and try to get to some interesting ones.

5. MIND MAPPING

Supplies: Paper and pens

Activity: Write down your topic MATERIALS in the center of a large sheet, branch

out into the major sub-topics, continue branching out into as many sub-sub-sub topics as possible. Look at the outcome, identify some interesting categories.

Outcome: Building on each others ideas.

GROUP #1 - VISUAL BRAINSTROMING

CONCEPT: MATERIALS

EXHIBIT: Design an interactive exhibit to get visitors inspired about Materials

ACTIVITY: Look through the magazines and pick/rip images that will represent a thought about MATERIALS.

As a group build a collage from these images and prepare to present the significance of the images that could lead to an exhibit idea.

Prepare to present the outcome.

You have 30 minutes…

GROUP #2 - WORD-CONCEPT ASSOCIATION

CONCEPT: MATERIALS

EXHIBIT: Design an interactive exhibit to get visitors inspired about Materials

ACTIVITY: Write down descriptive WORDS that come to mind about MATERIALS on posted notes. Stick them on a large sheet.

Try to analyze the words, cluster them under commonalities and see if these categories lead you towards an exhibit idea.

Prepare to present the outcome.

You have 30 minutes…

GROUP #3 – DRAW THE EXPERIENCE

CONCEPT: MATERIALS

EXHIBIT: Design an interactive exhibit to get visitors inspired about Materials

ACTIVITY: Draw “Materials” as you perceive them.

Look at the drawings you all had done and identify commonalities and contrasts.

Come up with an exhibit idea and explain it with your drawings and diagrams.

Prepare to present the outcome.

You have 30 minutes…

GROUP #4 – ROLE PLAYING

CONCEPT: MATERIALS

EXHIBIT: Design an interactive exhibit to get visitors inspired about Materials

ACTIVITY: Identify the stakeholders who might be using the finished exhibit (family members, students, teenagers etc.) Assign the roles to the members of your team.

Start acting out these roles focusing on the intuitive responses prompted by interacting with an exhibit about MATERIALS.

Prepare to present the outcome.

You have 30 minutes…

GROUP #5 - 101 IDEAS

CONCEPT: MATERIALS

EXHIBIT: Design an interactive exhibit to get visitors inspired about Materials

ACTIVITY: Write down 101 ideas about a possible MATERIALS exhibit experience.

Try to build on other’s ideas and once you reach 101 ideas, analyze your list.

Choose the most interesting idea.

Prepare to present the outcome.

You have 30 minutes…

GROUP #6 - MIND MAP

CONCEPT: MATERIALS

EXHIBIT: Design an interactive exhibit to get visitors inspired about Materials

ACTIVITY: Write down your topic MATERIALS in the center of a large sheet, branch out into the major sub-topics, continue branching out into as many sub-sub-sub topics as possible.

Look at the outcome, identify some interesting categories.
