Directions: Complete one of the following assignments. Note: Some assignments are worth more points! Consider your options thoughtfully. All assignments are due on October 20th.
Brain Mobile (20 Pts)Directions: Trace your head! (on desk or shadow from an overhead) The tracing will be used as a template (model) for a mobile you will create. This is an individual assignment only!
One side of the mobile should display the following:
- Frontal Lobe, Parietal Lobe, Occipital Lobe, Temporal Lobe, and any other areas shown in figure 6.6 on page 162 of the textbook (4 pts)
- Each Brain part should be labeled and represented with a picture/drawing that indicates the function of the anatomy. (4pts)
- Thalamus, Hypothalamus, Cerebellum, Reticular Activating system/Reticular Formation, Medulla, Brain stem, Limbic system, Corpus callosum, Pituitary Gland, Cerebral Cortex (5pts)
- Each Brain part should be labeled and represented with a picture/drawing that indicates the function of the anatomy. (5pts)
- Organization, aesthetics, legibility, creativity will be considered. (2pts)
Directions: You will create a story that illustrates and explains how the brain works. You will need to include at least 10 brain parts and 5 interactive elements in your book. Keep in mind your story should be suitable and appropriate for an elementary age students. You should be creative in explaining the function of the 10 brain structures you choose. This assignment may be completed individually or in partners.
Criteria to include:
- You must identify and explain the major functions of at least 10 brain parts. In addition to the story book illustrations you should have a brain map that indicates where the brain structure is located. (10pts)
- The story book must contain at least 5 interactive elements (pop-up, slides, lift-up doors, use of textures and sounds, etc) (10pts)
- Your book must be aesthetically pleasing, easy to read, and well organized. Be creative on the design and illustrations of your story. Include a cover. (5pts)
Songtastic-Brain Song (30 Points)
Directions: You will write a song about the brain. Your brain song lyrics can be written to a popular song or entirely created. This assignment may be completed individually or in partners.
Grading Rubric:
- Song includes 10 brain parts and a clear example of what that brain part controls. (10pts)
- Song is performed in class via live performance, DVD, etc. (You may tape your performance in advance) The song must last at least 1 minute. (10pts)
- Lyrics to the song are appropriate, accurate, and E-MAILED to Ms. Stiles. You will also need to turn in a hard copy. Effort and creativity must be evident. (10pts)
Directions: You will create 10 different brain limericks. This assignment can be done individually or in partners.
- Write 10 Original limericks, each focusing on an individual brain part.
- The limerick must clearly explain the function of each brain part chosen.
- Each limerick must be typed.

Superheroes Brain Assignment
Superheroes
Science fiction writers are always searching for good ideas for plots that will capture the interest of their readers. A common premise was that radiation somehow altered biological processes, transforming normal human beings into superhumans, some good and some evil. One example is the Incredible Hulk.
Your task is to create your own superhero by pretending that it is possible to magnify the abilities governed in selective sites in the human brain. You may find it helpful to begin by listing the component parts of the brain and their functions. Identify the area of the brain that would have to be altered to accomplish skills you've determined are important for your character. You must choose nine (9) of these components to include in your superhero. Some of these components will be necessary to accommodate the characters new skills while some will be the ones altered to produce the new characteristics.
You will need to:
. Draw your superhero, (can use clip art) (10 points)
. Design a costume/outfit that reflects his/her main ability (20 points)
. Name your character (10 points)
. Determine the super abilities she/he possess (20 points)
. Identify the brain structures that will need to be augmented to accommodate the new super skill (30 points)
. Identify a simple plot that would encourage this superhero to come to the rescue (10 points)
