Women’s College Softball Military Appreciation Tournament
Troutville, VA – The Botetourt Sports Complex will host six NCAA Division I schools at the annual Military Appreciation Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, September 28 & 29. The varsity women’s softball teams from Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, James Madison University, Radford University, Liberty University, and Longwood University will compete in this year’s event. Some of the most gifted softball players in the Commonwealth will square off in Botetourt County to win the title of 2013 Fall VA State Champs.
A ceremony honoring active and retired veterans of all service branches will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. All six teams will begin playing at noon and 2:30 p.m. Sunday’s round will also consist of games at noon and 2:30 p.m. Donations will be accepted; proceeds will go to support the Military Family Support Centers, Inc. Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $3 for youth, with veterans and children under 5 receiving free admission.
"We always look forward to this fall tournament,” said Scott Thomas, Head Softball Coach for Virginia Tech. “First of all, it is a great cause and we always want to lift up those who serve in our military. Secondly, it is a great venue with solid competition which trains us for the upcoming spring season."
In addition to the noble cause and top tier college softball talent, an added bonus to this year’s event will be a homecoming of sorts for James River High School softball standout and former NCAA National Player of the Year, Angela Tincher O’Brien, as she returns to her hometown as Virginia Tech’s new pitching coach. "What better way to break in Angela as our assistant coach than by having one of her first Hokie game coaching opportunities in her home county of Botetourt!” said Coach Thomas, “Very fitting!"
