About us: The Office of Environment and Heritage leads policy and reform in environment regulation, sustainability, biodiversity and native vegetation, coastal protection, and Aboriginal cultural heritage. We manage 6.8 million hectares of national parks and reserves and the Heritage branch within OEH works with communities to identify important places and objects and provides guidance in looking after heritage items.

Area Intro: Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust (RBG&DT) manages and conserves the horticulture of the living collections at Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, The Domain, Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan and Blue Mountain Botanic Garden Mount Tomah.

Duties: The Horticultural Apprentice will assist with and be trained in the hands on horticultural development and maintenance of horticultural collections and displays within controlled environments and in ground. This includes nursery, plant production, pest and disease control, weeding, mowing, edging, record keeping, curation of collections, and the use and maintenance of associated plant and equipment.

The Horticultural Apprentice will undertake and complete formal academic training in the Horticulture, Parks and Gardens Trade Certificate III, , as required for qualification for a Certificate of Competency in terms of the NSW Apprenticeship and Traineeship Act.

Q1. Describe a gardening project you have worked on, either in a previous job, or in a community garden, or at home. Where did you get the knowledge you needed to carry out this project? How did you construct the garden? How did you work out what plants to use? What did you do to promote growth in the garden and get rid of pests? What work, health and safety precautions did you take?

Q2.Describe a time you had to work as a member of a team. How did you communicate with the other team members? Give an example of your contribution to this team, and what made your contribution important to the team’s outcomes?
