Bakasi II camp 12th August 2016

After visiting the camp, it was agreed that

  • To continue with the present plan for drainage and Bills of Quantity that was prepared on 29th July after the first technical assessment, following IOM’s initiative. (see BoQ attached)
  • NEMA will be requested if the excavator parked at their compound can be used for digging trench to accelerate the work as well as grader to level the ground.
  • Need to make smaller trenches from low area shelters to connect with drainage system.
  • Need for Levelling-Instruments to ensure the slope is correct will be needed for such long distance (app. 750 meters)
  • IOM will calculate a price estimate for the drainage including labour cost.

UNICEF, UNHCR and IOM participated in assessment in Bakasi II.

NYSC on Saturday 13th August

The camp is in a very low area and water cannot be directed out of the camp, and for the moment the camp is in a very bad situation. There is literally water and mud everywhere. A large number of old and new shelters are in water and people living there have big problems coming in and out of the homes.

An assessment was done some time back by and iNGO but the Camp Management have not heard from the organization after that.

Suggestions were like this:

  • To dig a large pit in the lowest part of the camp and direct water to it in order to be absorbed into the ground underneath. Pit can be filled with debris or stones and put a water penetrating cloth on top cowered with sand. If needed more than one large pit can be done.
  • Small trenches should be dug from the ponds to the main pit.
  • There must also be done some work on the water posts, much water is wasted and goes direct into the camp.

NRC and IOM were present at the assessment.

Sanda Kyarimi Camp 13 August.

There are two large pools of water at the eastern part of the camp and also this camp is situated in a low area and water cannot be directed out of the camp but must be dealt with inside.

The part of camp where there is water is basically around the latrines.

Suggestion from the team was this:

  • Connect the two ponds with a drainage and dig a soak away pit filled with debris/stones and let water be absorbed into the ground underneath.

NRC and IOM were present at the assessment.

Goni Kashallani Camp

There were only found some small ponds in the camp but several drenches were done by the IDPs living there.

Conclusion was:

  • Water can easily be directed outside the camp and distance is not very far.
  • IOM will provide the camp management with shovels and the people living there will do all work with drainages. Shovels will be brought to the camp management Tuesday 16th August.
