Introduction to CAD

Assignment #3

Objective:

The student will construct a computer-generated drawing utilizing the basic measuring and drawing commands.

Assignment:

Boot the system. Load AutoCAD. Begin a new Drawing.

At the bottom of the standard AutoCAD window is the status toggles bar. The status toggle bar displays the current state of specific drawing control features. Click on the INFER CONSTRAINTS, ORTHO MODE, POLAR TRACKING, OBJECT SNAP, 3D OBJECT SNAP, OBJECT SNAP TRACKING, ALLOW/DISALLOW DYNAMIC UCS, DYNAMIC INPUT, SHOW/HIDE LINEWEIGHT, SHOW/HIDE TRANSPARENCY, QUICK PROPERTIES, AND SELECTION CYCLING icons and turn these features OFF. Turn on the SNAP MODE and GRID DISPLAY.

At the command prompt type in the command DSETTINGS. In the Drafting Settings dialog box select the Snap and Grid tab. In the Grid Style sections check the box for 2D Model Space. Click the OK button to complete the settings.

Define a new layer called 1 and set layer 1 to Color 1. Use the command LAYER. Make this Layer current.

Insert the border and title block and set the drawing area for size "A" drawing paper (LIMITS). The drawing name is ASSIGNMENT #3, the scale is 1 = 1, the date is the due date for the assignment, and the number (NO) is 3. Use all upper case lettering.

Define a new layer called 2 and set layer 2 to color 2. Use the command LAYER. Make this layer current.

Set the GRID and the SNAP to .25".

Complete Assignment 3-1 on the screen. Center the drawing by eye in the drawing area.

All given line segments should be drawn as a single line from beginning point to end point. Lines drawn in pieces are considered errors and poor CAD practice and will be marked as such.

Lines drawn over lines are considered errors and poor CAD practice and will be marked as such.

Save the drawing to your working disk.

Plot the border and title block and Assignment 3-1. You can complete all three figures at one time and plot the individual layers after the drawing is saved (ended).

Turn off Layer 2.

Define a new layer called 3 and set layer 3 to color 3. Make this layer current.

Complete Assignment 3-2 on the screen. Do not draw the centerlines. Center the drawing by eye in the drawing area.

Save the drawing.

Plot the border and title block and Assignment 3-2.

Assignment #3

Turn off Layer 3.

Define a new layer called 4 and set layer 4 to color 4. Make this layer current.

Complete Assignment 3-3 on the screen. Do not draw the centerlines. Center the drawing by eye in the drawing area.

Save the drawing.

Plot the border and title block and Assignment 3-3.

Turn off Layer 4.

Construct the drawing in Assignment 3-4 using layers 20 through 25. Choose your own color but use the same color for all of the layers. Set the linetypes for each of the layers as shown below. Each circle should be on a different layer starting with Layer 20.

Layer 20Linetype Continuous

Layer 21Linetype dashed2

Layer 22Linetype hidden2

Layer 23Linetype center2

Layer 24Linetype phantom2

Layer 25Linetype continuous

Complete Assignment 3-4 on the screen. Do not draw the centerlines. Center the drawing by eye in the drawing area.

Save the drawing.

Plot the border and title block and Assignment 3-4.

Evaluation:

You should have only one file name for this assignment with Assignment 3-1, Assignment 3-2, Assignment 3-3, and Assignment 3-4 all being on the same drawing file and four plots. Be sure to plot the border and title block with each figure.

Refer to the PROJECT EVALUATION handout for the required items to be turned in for evaluation.

  • Project Assignment Sheet(s) including all drawings.
  • Hard copies (4 finished plots) of the assignment
  • The drawing file copied to the designated grading folder
