Boost for rehabilitation care at Casey Hospital
- Caring for elderly patients following a hospital stay
- Rehabilitation for patients with neurological and orthopaedic conditions
- Napthine Government building a healthier Victoria
Minister for Health David Davis today officially opened a new $22.2 million sub-acute care facility at Casey Hospital in Berwick, boosting local access to vital rehabilitation services.
Mr Davis said Casey Hospital is well placed to meet the demand for rehabilitation services in Melbourne’s rapidly growing and ageing outer south-east suburbs, now and into the future.
“The Napthine Government secured $22.2 million from the Commonwealth’s National Partnership Agreement on Improving Public Hospital,” Mr Davis said.
“This 30-bed facility will deliver high quality care for elderly patients as they recover following a hospital stay, as well as rehabilitation services for patients with neurological and orthopaedic conditions.
“The facility has a patient dining room, therapy space, allied health consultation rooms, a mobility garden to support rehabilitation and larger than standard bedrooms which enable therapy to be undertaken in a patient’s bedroom.
“Small lounge areas also provide a supportive environment where family and friends can visit for longer periods without having to consider the impact on the other patients in the room.”
Member for Gembrook Brad Battin paid tribute to staff at Casey Hospital for providing world class care in one of Melbourne’s fastest growing communities over the past 10 years.
“Over the past 10 years Casey Hospital has grown significantly, with the emergency department now operating 24-hours and treating more than 52,000 patients a year.
“Thanks to this new purpose-built facility, the former sub-acute ward will be used to treat general patients and allow an increase in the provision of maternity services,” Mr Battin said.
Liberal candidate for Narre Warren South Susan Serey, Liberal candidate for Narre Warren North Amanda Stapledon and Liberal candidate for Cranbourne Geoff Ablett joined Mr Davis at the official opening.
Mr Davis said the Coalition Government is ensuring Victoria has the key infrastructure to deliver high quality healthcare into the 21st century.
“The Casey sub-acute facility is among more than $4.5 billion of health infrastructure investment underway across Victoria, as the Napthine Government builds a healthier Victoria,” Mr Davis said.
