Welcome to Kindergarten!

The first year of school is always an exciting adventure for the entire family. Here at Wait Primary, we encourage you to become involved in your child’s education.

Child’s Age to Begin Kindergarten

Children will need to be 5 years old by August 1st of the entrance year that they’re to begin Kindergarten.

Health Requirements and Medical Information

Medical/Dental Forms

All Kindergarten students are required to have:

·  Health Record/ Physician’s Report- completed by physician

·  Health Record/ Dentist’s Report- completed by dentist

·  Health and Social History- completed by parent

·  Immunization Record

·  5 doses-DPT (DtaP, DT), 4 doses-Polio

·  2 doses-MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella)

·  3 doses-Hepatitis B, 2 doses -Varicella– Chicken Pox

Please bring completed medical forms to Screening in March or mail them prior to the start of school. Exclusion from school letters are sent home for any student who does not have proof of all immunizations 14 days after the start of school.

Student Medication

Any student requiring medication must have a Medication Form on file at the school. This includes both Prescription and over-the-counter medications (both to be signed by a physician).

School Supplies

Writing and Art Supplies

4 boxes of 24 crayons

2 packages 8 markers (Classic colors)

1 package (or 4 individual) dry erase markers

12 – 24 sharpened #2 pencils

Scissors (preferred brand- Fiskars)

2 4oz bottles of school glue or 1 large bottle

10 glue sticks

1 large pink eraser

Water color paints

Organizational and Classroom Supplies

Book bag/ backpack

1 two-pocket folder

1 box of tissues

1 roll of paper towels

2 containers of Clorox wipes (Clorox brand due to health laws)

1 change of clothing (in a bag marked with student’s name)

Girls: box of gallon plastic bags (zipper style)

Boys: box of sandwich plastic bags (zipper style)

Individual teachers may request additional items.
Please bring school supplies on August 18 or 19.

Surround Care

Surround Care is a before and after school program for our elementary students. Hours are 6:30 am until school convenes and from dismissal until 6:30 pm on regular school days. For information, see their flyer or contact Director Lucene Leech, (330) 422-2479.

Lunch

Students may purchase a lunch for $2.75. Menus are sent home every month. If packing a lunch, students may purchase milk separately for $0.50. We encourage parents to use the online Meal Pay Plus system to pre-pay student lunches. Visit our district website to access the online pay system.

Student Fees

Student fees are $20 for kindergarten and first grade. A reminder will be sent home with students at the start of the school year.

Curriculum and Schedule

Wait Primary teachers adhere to the Common Core State Standards. For specific content standards visit the Ohio Department of Education website www.ode.state.oh.us

Each Kindergarten schedule will include: Reading, Math, Writing, Science, and Social Studies Instruction; Calendar Time; Center Time; Lunch and Recess. Students attend Gym, Music, Art, Library, and Computer Lab once a week.

Parent-School Communication

All teachers have email and voicemail. Parents may use email, voicemail or a hand-written note to communicate with teachers.

Medical Concerns

If your child has a chronic health condition such as severe allergies requiring an Epi-Pen; asthma needing an inhaler; diabetes; or anything you feel needs to be brought to the attention of the school nurse, please contact the nurse's office at (330)422-2400 x 2619.

Registration

Where do I get a registration packet?

Packets are distributed at Kindergarten Registration Night, March 4 at 6:30 at Wait.

When and where do I register?

Bring the completed packet and documentation to your Screening appointment on either March 14 or March 28.

Should I complete all paperwork before registration?

Yes, it is to your advantage to have all paperwork completed when you come in to register. Medical forms and immunization records may be mailed to the school office before the start of school if not complete or up-to-date at registration.

Do I register if I my child was a preschooler at Wait?

You do need to attend registration and screening in March. Birth certificate, Social Security, and proof of residency are already on file and not required at the time of registration/ screening. The medical paperwork should be submitted or mailed to the office before the start of school.

Kindergarten Screening

What is Kindergarten Screening?

Students visit a variety of stations including vision, hearing, speech, language, social, and academic screening.

When is Kindergarten Screening?
Parents will sign up for a screening appointment for either Friday, March 14 or Friday, March 28. Screening will last about 90 minutes. Please remember to bring a small photo of your child.

How do I sign up, check, or change my appointment?

Sign up at Kindergarten Registration or call Sue Stockard, Secretary, at (330) 422-2400.

Meet the Kindergarten Teacher!

When will I know my child's class/teacher assignment?

Letters will be mailed in June with information about your child’s teacher and schedule for the start of the school year.

Staggered Start to the School Year

The first two days of the school year, Monday, August 18 and Tuesday, August 19, we will have scheduled times for our kindergarten parents and students to meet their teachers. The specific time slot for your child’s teacher will be mailed to you in June. At this meeting, students should bring in their school supplies.

When is the first day of school for Kindergarten?

Wednesday, August 20 ~ First Day for students with last name A-M

Thursday, August 21 ~ First Day for students with last name N-Z

Friday, August 22 ~ All Kindergarteners

School Transportation

We prefer that all students arrive and leave on the bus.

When will I learn the bus stop location and times?
Lists will be posted on the district website and the front doors of the school in August. For bus questions, contact our Transportation supervisor, Beth Kinder, (330) 626-4909.

What time does school start?

Students may enter the school at 8:30 and school starts at 8:45. Students will be marked tardy after 8:45 am.

What are the drop off procedures for car riders?

If you choose to drop-off your child in the morning, please park your car and walk your child to the area in front of the main entrance. Students will walk into the school independently.

What are the pick-up procedures for car riders?
Parents will need to notify the office if their child is a car rider. Car riders will be dismissed to the gym at 3:00. Parents will need to show identification.

Absence and Tardy Procedures

What if my child is not coming to school?

Call the school before 9:00 AM to let us know if your child will not be in school. You may call during school hours or you may leave a message anytime on Mrs. Chaney’s voicemail. Please state your child's name, teacher's name and reason for the absence. Mrs. Val Chaney, Office Aide (330) 422-2400 x1.

What if my child is late to school?

Children are tardy if they arrive after 8:45 am. Parents will bring their child into the lobby and sign in.

What if I my child has an appointment during the day?

Please send in a note with your pick-up time. Students will be called to the office when you arrive. Please avoid pick up times between 2:30 and 3:00.
