at
Petworth Park, West Sussex, GU28 0AE OS Grid Ref:197:SU976218
Proceeds will go to the National Trust
Come and join us for an exceptional opportunity to ride amidst the beautiful 700-acre deer park, landscaped by 'Capability' Brown and immortalised in Turner's paintings. We have been very lucky to secure this venue by kind permission of the National Trust so please don’t miss it, bring family and friends too who can use the opportunity whilst you ride, to visit the vast late 17th-century Petworth House, cafe and shop. The house contains the National Trust's finest collection of pictures, with numerous works by Turner, Van Dyck, Reynolds and Blake, ancient and Neo-classical sculpture, fine furniture and carvings by Grinling Gibbons.
There is no road work and the distance will be circa 10-12k so equivalent to a Level 1 POR. You will park inside Petworth Park itself and ride on lovely grassy tracks with stunning views around every corner. It will be a wonderful way to finish the 2014 Trec season and we welcome all newbies to Trec and indeed anyone who simply fancies a very special, fun ride!

Directions, Droppings and Deer!:
Please enter Petworth Park through the Kennel Lodges which are found on the A283 just out of Petworth, past the Stonemasons pub on the road to Chiddingfold. The entrance will be clearly marked, access is easy and there is plenty of parking BUT we have told the National Trust how tidy and respectful treccies are of the environment, so please take ALL your rubbish and droppings home with you.
Note: We are near the ‘rutting’ season for deer so the small fallow males like clashing their heads and antlers together. There is no need for any alarm but it is wise not to ride too close to the males. They are however, most likely to move away from you with the herd
Photographer
Steve Wall will be taking photographs, please support him
What is TREC?
BHS TREC is a fun riding event usually comprising three phases. The competition involves the skills and situations a rider might encounter on a hack, including map reading. However this competition will involve only one of the phases, the POR.
POR (mounted orienteering)
You are provided with a master map and normally you would copy this onto a photocopy of the same map. However, for this ride, we will be providing everyone with a pre-drawn map so there is no time to be spent copying in the map room!. You will then follow the route at a pre-determined speed. There may also be tickets to be noted or questions to be answered on your record card, which is also provided. Riders usually start at 5 minute intervals. In Pairs classes this phase is ridden as a pair.
Required equipment
Tack and equipment will be checked. The following should be carried on the POR phase; failure to have these items incurs a 2 point penalty for each item up to a maximum of 10 penalty points:
ID for horse and rider (compulsory, competitor may not start without these) , showing your competitor number, event emergency no., mobile phone and next of kin information.
Compass (compulsory for Novices and Open classes)
Pen (compulsory to record tickets/answers to questions)
Headcollar and rope (or combination bridle)
Waterproofs (i.e. jacket) only if raining, hopefully not!
Note: No Hi-Viz is required but may be worn if you wish.
DOGS ARE ALLOWED BUT THERE ARE DEER SO IF YOU SUSPECT YOUR DOG MIGHT WISH TO CHASE DEER THEY MUST BE ON A LEAD AT ALL TIMES.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
The event manager/organiser has taken all reasonable precautions to ensure the health and safety of everyone present. For these measures to be effective, everyone must take all reasonable precautions to avoid and prevent accidents occurring and must obey the instructions of the officials and stewards on the day.
Please take care to safeguard tack and possessions. Young children must be supervised at all times.
Neither the event manager/organiser nor the land/course owners can accept responsibility for loss or injury to persons or animals or property howsoever caused.
