2 Ne. 6

Note that it is now Jacob speaking, not Nephi.

1Thewordsof Jacob, the brother of Nephi, which he spake unto the people of Nephi:

2Behold, my beloved brethren, I, Jacob, having been called of God, and ordained after the manner of his holy order, and having been consecrated by my brother Nephi, unto whom ye look as akingor a protector, and on whom ye depend for safety, behold ye know that I have spoken unto you exceedingly many things.

3Nevertheless, I speak unto you again; for I am desirous for thewelfareof your souls. Yea, mine anxiety is great for you; and ye yourselves know that it ever has been. For I have exhorted you with all diligence; and I have taught you the words of my father; and I have spoken unto you concerning all things which arewritten, from the creation of the world. Note the similar wording to Lehi and Nephi.

4And now, behold, I would speak unto you concerning things which are, and which are to come; wherefore, I will read you the words ofIsaiah. And they are the words which my brother has desired that I should speak unto you. And I speak unto you for your sakes, that ye may learn and glorify the name of your God.

5And now, the words which I shall read are they which Isaiah spake concerning all the house of Israel; wherefore, they may belikenedunto you, for ye are of the house of Israel. And there are many things which have been spoken by Isaiah which may be likened unto you, because ye are of the house of Israel.

6And now, these are the words:(See Isaiah 49:22-26) Thussaith the Lord God: Behold, I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles, and set up mystandardto the people; and they shall bring thy sons in their arms, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.

7Andkingsshall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers; they shall bow down to thee with their faces towards the earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know thatI amthe Lord; for they shall not be ashamed thatwaitfor me. Pretty grim. This is apocalyptic “Great reversal” language—those who have power and status will be brought low and ashamed when God comes to set everything right, and those who are humble and lowly will be raised up and honored.

8And now I, Jacob, would speak somewhat concerning these words. For behold, the Lord has shown me that those who were atJerusalem, from whence we came, have beenslainandcarried awaycaptive. (carried away to Babylon after the destruction of Jerusalem in 587)

9Nevertheless, the Lord has shown unto me that they shouldreturnagain. And he also has shown unto me that the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, should manifest himself unto them in the flesh; and after he should manifest himself they shouldscourgehim andcrucifyhim, according to the words of the angel who spake it unto me.

10And after they havehardenedtheir hearts and stiffenedtheir necks against the Holy One of Israel, behold, thejudgmentsof the Holy One of Israel shall come upon them. And the day cometh that they shall be smitten and afflicted. This is another example of justifying atrocity as God’s will, which then becomes a vicious cycle. If Jews are good Jews, they have not “hardened their hearts and stiffened their necks against the Holy One of Israel”

11Wherefore, after they are driven to and fro, for thus saith the angel, many shall be afflicted in the flesh, and shall not be suffered toperish, because of the prayers of the faithful; they shall be scattered, and smitten, and hated; nevertheless, the Lord will be merciful unto them, thatwhenthey shall come to theknowledgeof their Redeemer, they shall begatheredtogether again to the landsof their inheritance. This is a complicated “challenge the scriptures” moment. On the surface this sounds ok—as long as you accept the assumptions of the text. But once you know the fraught history of Judaism and Christianity, it simply is not ok.

12And blessed are theGentiles, they of whom the prophet has written; for behold, if it so be that they shall repent and fight not against Zion, and do not unite themselves to that great andabominablechurch, they shall be saved; for the Lord God will fulfil hiscovenantswhich he has made unto his children; and for this cause the prophet has written these things.

13Wherefore, they that fight against Zion and the covenant people of the Lord shall lick up the dust of their feet; and the people of the Lord shall not beashamed. For the people of the Lord are they whowaitfor him; for they still wait for the coming of the Messiah.

14And behold, according to the words of the prophet, the Messiah will set himself again thesecondtime to recover them; wherefore, he willmanifesthimself unto them in power and great glory, unto thedestructionof their enemies, when that day cometh when they shall believe in him; and none will he destroy that believe in him.

15And they that believe not in him shall bedestroyed, both byfire, and by tempest, and by earthquakes, and by bloodsheds, and bypestilence, and byfamine. And they shall know that the Lord is God, the Holy One of Israel. We all long to have wrongs set right, for justice, for everything to turn out ok. Unfortunately, the dark and dramatic, even violent, is what gets stuck in our heads.

16Forshall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captivedelivered?

17But thus saith the Lord: Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered;fortheMighty Godshalldeliverhis covenant people. For thus saith the Lord: I will contend with them that contendeth with thee—

18And I will feed them that oppress thee, with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood as with sweet wine; and all flesh shall know that I the Lord am thy Savior and thyRedeemer, theMighty Oneof Jacob. Again, graphic and dark language. Does it mean that the wicked will be punished by the consequences of their actions?

2 Ne. 7 (Compare Isaiah 50) I will do minimal alignment to help you do your own comparing. Note which words are added, which are removed, and which are changed. Pay particular attention to italicized words.

Isaiah 50 / 2 Nephi 7
1Thussaith theLord, Whereisthe bill of your mother’s divorcement, whom I have put away? or which of my creditorsis itto whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquitieshave ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is yourmotherput away.
2Wherefore, when I came, was thereno man? when I called, was therenone to answer? Is myhandshortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I nopowerto deliver? behold, at my rebuke Idry upthe sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stinketh, becausethere isno water, and dieth for thirst.
3I clothe the heavens with blackness, and I make sackcloth their covering.
4The LordGodhath given me the tongue of thelearned, that I should know how to speak awordin season tohim that isweary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.
5¶The LordGodhath opened mineear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back.
6Igavemybackto thesmiters, and mycheeksto them that plucked off the hair: Ihidnot my face fromshame andspitting.
7¶For the LordGodwill help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.
8He isnear thatjustifiethme; who will contend with me? let us stand together: whoismine adversary? let him come near to me.
9Behold, the LordGodwill help me; whoishethatshall condemn me? lo, they all shall waxoldas a garment; the mothshall eat them up.
10¶Whoisamong you that feareth theLord, that obeyeth thevoiceof hisservant, that walkethindarkness, and hath nolight? let himtrustin the name of theLord, andstay uponhis God.
11Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compassyourselves about with sparks: walk in thelightof your fire, and in the sparksthatye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down insorrow. / 1Yea, for thus saith the Lord: Have I put thee away, or have I cast thee off forever? For thus saith the Lord: Where is thebillof your mother’sdivorcement? To whom have I put thee away, or to which of mycreditorshave Isold you? Yea, to whom have I sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.
2Wherefore, when I came, there was no man; when I called, yea, there was none to answer. O house of Israel, is my hand shortened at all that it cannot redeem, or have I no power to deliver? Behold, at my rebuke Idry upthe sea, I make theirriversa wilderness and theirfishto stink because the waters are dried up, and they die because of thirst.
3I clothe the heavens withblackness, and I make sackcloththeir covering.
4The Lord God hath given me thetongueof the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season unto thee, O house of Israel. When ye are weary he waketh morning by morning. He waketh mine ear to hear as the learned.
5The Lord God hath opened mineear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back.
6I gave my back to thesmiter, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair. I hid not my face fromshame and spitting.
7For the Lord God will help me, therefore shall I not be confounded. Therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not beashamed.
8And the Lord is near, and hejustifiethme. Who will contend with me? Let us stand together. Who is mine adversary? Let him come near me, and I willsmitehim with the strength of my mouth.
9For the Lord God will help me. And all they who shall condemnme, behold, all they shallwax oldas a garment, and the moth shall eat them up.
10Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth thevoiceof his servant, thatwalkethin darkness and hath no light?
11Behold all ye that kindle fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks, walk in the light ofyourfire and in the sparks which ye have kindled.Thisshall ye have of mine hand—ye shall lie down in sorrow.

Notes (so I don’t mess up the alignment)

The theme of this chapter seems to be one of determined reconciliation. God is saying in effect, “You have estranged and distanced yourselves from me. You complain that I am far away. But I am here. I will reclaim you. We will be family again.”

There are two speakers in this chapter: God and the “Servant” who among other things seems to personify Israel.

v. 2: How much power DOES God have? A vital question. I find the doctrine of a limited God to be sensical and satisfying.

v. 4: I love the idea of being “awake”, of God renewing us when we are exhausted physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

v. 7, 9: Note repetition of “The Lord God will help me”

v. 8: The assurance that we are living in a way pleasing to God provides incomparable security (of course, we need to remain humble and sure we don’t just *think* we are pleasing God.. we need to remain open to being challenged).

v. 11: This wording has struck me my entire adult life. It speaks to self-centeredness, narcissism even. Being worried about building yourself up, probably at the cost of others. This path leads to disappointment and sorrow. In its historical context it most directly referred to those who depend on themselves rather than rely on God.

2 Ne. 8 (CompareIsaiah 51 and 52:1–2)

Isaiah 51; 52:1–2 / 1 Nephi 8
1Hearkento me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek theLord: look unto therockwhenceye are hewn, and to the hole of the pitwhenceye are digged.
2Look untoAbrahamyourfather, and unto Sarahthat bare you: for I called himalone, andblessedhim, and increased him.
3For theLordshallcomfortZion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness likeEden, and her desert like thegardenof theLord; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.
4¶Hearken unto me, my people; and give ear unto me, O my nation: for alawshall proceed from me, and I will make my judgment to rest for a light of the people.
5My righteousnessisnear; mysalvationis gone forth, and mine arms shalljudgethe people; theislesshall wait upon me, and on mine arm shall they trust.
6Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shallvanish awaylike smoke, and the earth shallwaxoldlike a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.
7¶Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whoseheartismy law;fearye not thereproach ofmen, neither be ye afraid of theirrevilings.
8For themothshall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool: but my righteousness shall be for ever, and my salvation from generation to generation.
9¶Awake, awake, put onstrength, O arm of theLord; awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old.Art thou not it that hath cut Rahab, andwounded thedragon?
10Artthou not it which hathdriedthe sea, the waters of the great deep; that hath made the depths of the sea away for theransomedto pass over?
11Therefore theredeemedof theLordshallreturn, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlastingjoyshall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy;and sorrow andmourningshall flee away.
12I,evenI,amhe that comforteth you: whoartthou, that thou shouldest beafraidof a manthatshall die, and of the son of manwhichshall be madeasgrass;
