Meeting Minutes: Tuesday, July 28

A meeting of the Alamosa Volunteer Search and Rescue was held on Tuesday July 28, 2009 at 1800 hours mountain daylight time. It was held at Alamosa Sheriffs Department.

Board Members Present: Roy Hood, George Rapoza, Jade Wright, Kevin Wright

Call to Order

Kevin Wright called the meeting to order at 1805 hours mountain daylight time and Jade Wright recorded the minutes. A quorum of members were present, and the meeting, having been duly convened, was ready to proceed with business.

Introduction of New Members and Guests

Susie Hooper is a new member of AVSAR and was introduced to the team.

Approval of Preceding Minutes

The minutes of the previous meeting held on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, will be posted online and held for approval next meeting.

August Fundraise – SLV Brewery

Kevin will contact the Brewery and discuss the “Suds for SAR” idea. He will report back to the team next meeting.

New Business

Sheriff Stong and Kevin spoke Monday, July 27, 2009

Sheriff Stong is speaking with the heads of regional 19 law enforcement agencies to form one regional SLV team who will assist in all locations in the SLV. Pros and cons of this issue were discussed among the team. The team expressed their criticisms and questions. SLV SAR teams will be called and this idea will be followed up on over the next few meetings.

Dog rescue volunteers

Kevin was asked and then asked the team about rescuing dogs. This issue was discussed and explained to the team. Liability under workman’s compensation was also discussed.

Vehicle recovery issues

Kevin told the team vehicle recoveries are not covered under workman’s compensation and therefore that vehicle recoveries are prohibited during a SAR rescue mission.

2 Whisperlite stoves purchased?

George is going to purchase two Whisperlite stoves by September 1st. The team will reimburse him for buying them.

Airway Openers

Kevin purchased (qty 10) 100 mm EMT airways for WFR/WFA use.

NOLS WFR Course Offering in October

A WFR course will be offered in Crestone October 3-12. It will cost $620. If you are interested in getting WFR certified please contact Kevin Wright

Everyone please have your 72 Hour packs on standby

IC training

If you want to work incident command please visit http://training.fema.gov/emiweb/is/is100a.asp and show Kevin your certificate of completion. This course is 3 hours long and ends with a test. Kevin is asking that everyone should take a look at the website so they understand what an IC goes through.

Instruction/ Monthly Training Briefing

Field Training

Field training will take place Sunday, August 2, 2009 at Bishops Rock. Training will start at 0900.

Next Meeting

The next meeting of the Alamosa Volunteer Search and Rescue will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at 1800-2100 hours. It will be held at the Alamosa Sheriff’s Office Classroom. All are welcome and encouraged to come.
