Course description:

An introduction to the study of the New Testament involving the exegesis of the text of Acts, analysis of key ideas of the book, consideration of relevant historical material, discussion of controversial and practical aspects of the book, and orientation to the setting of the New Testament epistles. Required as prerequisite to all 200-399 Bible courses.

Course objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1.  describe the basic content of the book of Acts.

2.  define the major events of the book of Acts within their historical, geographical and cultural contexts.

3.  identify major theological themes from the book of Acts.

4.  interpret the book of Acts and apply it to the life of the church in its modern context.

5.  evaluate their own participation in the church.

Texts:

The Book of Acts (New American Standard Version, New International Version, or King James Version recommended for class discussion.)

Stott, John. The Message of Acts: The Spirit, the Church, and the World. Downers Grove: InterVarsity, 1990, 1994.

Assignments:

1.  Each student is expected to participate in the class and contribute positively to the learning environment.

2.  Each student will read the textbook and submit written answers to study questions.

3.  Each student will take three unit examinations and a comprehensive examination at the end of the semester; exam dates; February 19, April 2 , April 30, May-final

4.  Each student will memorize the major events of each chapter in the book of Acts.

5.  Each student will memorize Acts 1:1-11.

6.  Details will be provided in class concerning weekly assignments and quizzes. Students should plan for a written assignment or quiz each week.

NOTE: All assignments must be submitted in order to pass the course.

Participation 20 %

Course outline:

The course will be structured on the themes and text of the book of Acts.

Attendance:

As per CBC policy, students with the equivalent of more than two weeks of absences in Acts of the Apostles will receive a grade of FA. Students who reach this level of absences before the 7th week of the semester have the option to withdraw from the course. Being late for class counts toward being absent. Each student is required to keep any documentation of reasons for absences (doctor’s note or receipt, school nurse’s report, note to professor about school-sponsored activity, personal records, etc.). Such records must be turned in with any petition for reinstatement. Reinstatement will not be considered without proper records and documentation.

After the student’s first absence, all absences up to the maximum four will negatively affect the student’s grade (see grading policy above).

Classroom Etiquette

1.  All students will participate in class activities.

2.  Everyone in the classroom will show respect to others in the room.

3.  No cell phones will be used during class time.

4.  Laptops may be used for taking notes; students using laptops must sit in the front row; no multi-tasking during class.
