Background:

An assessment of the BCC Associate Degree in Arts for matriculation and advanced placement in Literatures in English, History, Sociology, French with Themes and Spanish with Themes was conducted by The University of the West Indies Faculties of Humanities & Education and Social Sciences on December 14, 2005 in Barbados. The courses in Geography were assessed by the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, Mona in 2007.

Recommendations for credits and exemptions in Spanish with Themes and French with Themes were submitted to the May 2006 Meeting of the Board for Non-Campus Countries and Distance Education [BNCCDE Paper 12a, 2005-2006]. The Board for Undergraduate Studies (BUS) accepted the Recommendations and granted its approval [Meeting of BUS held May 15, 2006]. Literatures in English and History are yet to be finalised. The two Geography courses found no UWI equivalents.

Sociology courses:

The Associate Degree in Arts - Sociology courses were also assessed at the December 14, 2005 meeting but additional materials were required from the BCC in order for a thorough assessment to be done. These courses have now been re-assessed and signed off by course lecturers at Cave Hill and St. Augustine with concurrence from the relevant Head of Department and Deans. The BNCC/DE is being asked to note the following recommendation, approve and forward to the BUS:
