Position Description:

The Community Forestry Intern will help to identify, prioritize, and implement tree maintenance projects throughout our watersheds in Baltimore City and Baltimore County.

BWB currently plants about 2,000 trees per season with volunteers and staff. Most trees are planted on public property at schools and on park and public lands. Some trees are given away or purchased through our nursery to increase canopy on private property. We also do some management of invasive plants at our plantings to improve forest health and prevent canopy loss. Lastly, we are planting street trees and creating and amending street tree lawns to improve tree health and reduce impervious surfaces.

The Community Forestry Intern will work closely with BWB’s Volunteer Manager and Community Forester under the Senior Manager for Greening.

Core Duties:

  • Conduct site visits and surveys of existing restoration plantings
  • Work with green pod to identify and implement tree maintenance projects
  • Assist with summer watering, mulching, and staking
  • Provide support for volunteer maintenance events and other volunteers events as needed
  • Maintain up-to-date maintenance records using Google Earth and Excel

  • Self-starter who can work independently
  • High attention to detail
  • Lightning-fast text messaging ability
  • Excellent listening and speaking skills

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and work outdoors in occasionally adverse conditions, including cold, heat, and bugs
  • Ability to work 25-30 hours per week from June through August (hours and start/end dates flexible)
  • Valid driver’s license required; own transportation highly preferred

Bonus Qualifications:

  • Experience with tree planting and maintenance
  • Familiarity with native Maryland tree forests and ecosystems
  • Experience with GIS, Google Earth/Maps or iTree mapping programs
