Blood and Body Fluids Policy

Farm Name:

Blood and body fluids can carry disease causing microbes and should not be in contact with mushrooms at anytime. All employees should be trained to learn this policy. The Mushroom Industry FSTK covers the basic training on this matter. A training log must be kept up to date. A properly stocked first aid kit should be readily accessible to supervisors, QC and foremen.

If an employee in the production area cuts himself, he/she should immediately:

  1. Tell his supervisor about the incident.
  2. Check that he/she is OK and stop the bleeding. If the cut is major or bleeding can’t be stopped, medical attention should be sought.
  3. Go outside the mushroom picking room to wash his hands or the affected area.
  4. Put a bandage on the cut and then cover it with a glove if it is a hand injury. Use only bandages provided by the supervisor.
  5. Return to work.

The employee and the supervisor must make sure that blood and/or body fluids did not get on any picked mushrooms, mushroom beds, knives, or mushroom containers such as tills or baskets. If blood got on any mushrooms, these mushrooms should be thrown awayimmediately.

If the cut took place and went unnoticed for a considerable period of time it will be necessary to check the product that has been picked or materials used by that employeeand notify the growing manager.

A solution of 1 part chlorine bleach to 10 parts water (or other equivalent approved sanitizer solution) should be used to disinfect any area or food contact surface (i.e. baskets. knives) contaminated withblood.

Supervisors should not attempt to clean up a spill or assist another person without first obtaining gloves and protective gear. When gloves are removed, pull the glove off turning it inside out.

Drop them in the container with the contaminated material and then thoroughly scrub hands and forearms with soap under warm running water. Any clothing that has been contaminated must be removed and washed.

In addition, if an employee has cuts or sores when coming to work, he should ask the supervisor for a bandage and a glove. The employee must wash his hands before putting the bandage on.

If an employee touches an exposed wound, he should wash his hands before touching any mushrooms.
