EMOTIONAL SMARTS - Helping Children Manage Feelings

Looking for ways to help your children fare better in school, get along with friends, and be less likely to strike out in anger? Experts agree that teaching kids to be emotionally “smart” promotes success in many areas of their lives. Try these suggestions to boost your child’s emotional intelligence:

*Help them to name their feelings. Kids need names for feelings. Being able to label feelings such as sadness, anger, or loneliness helps them to recognize those emotions when they happen. In turn, knowing what they are feeling can help them find ways to cope. To build your children’s feelings vocabulary, describe emotions you see them experiencing. Example: You seemed angry when Josh wouldn’t play video games with you.”

*Give them guidelines. Once your kids are able to recognize their feelings, provide ground rules for managing them. A good rule of thumb is, “When expressing anger, you cannot hurt yourself, others, or damage property.” Also, let your children know what they can do. For example, they might take a deep breath, draw a picture of what they are feeling, write in a diary, or talk to a trusted person.

*Act with empathy. Chances are you are already teaching your kids empathy, or concern for others’ feelings, without even realizing it. Just meeting their needs helps them to learn to care for others. Whenever possible, find opportunities to help your youngsters think about how they would feel in someone else’s shoes. Example: “How do you think Amber felt when the other kids laughed when she fell?”

PUBLIC INFORMATION REQUESTS

As you know, the district is required by law to release to anyone who makes a formal request through the Public Information Office, students’ names, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, dates of attendance, awards received in school, and most recent and previous school attended. The district frequently receives such requests from salespersons and others, and we must comply unless the parents have objected in writing with the release of this information.

NORTHWEST ASSISTANCE MINISTRIES

Northwest Assistance Ministries will be making appointments for the 2013 Back to School Program. This program provides free school supplies to low income families. If you are interested, please call 281-583-5600 to schedule an appointment. Make sure they know you are in the KleinSchool District.
DRESS CODE

1. No tank tops or midriff-exposed shirts.

2. No pants that are frayed, torn or unhemmed.

3. Shorts must be mid thigh length.

4. Shoes should be enclosed for safety’s sake. Sandals are discouraged. Socks are encouraged.

5. Any hair color or style that is distracting or disturbing will not be permitted at school.

PLEASE BE SURE TO CHECK LOST & FOUND FOR LOST SWEATERS AND JACKETS. ANY UNCLAIMED ITEMS WILL BE DONATED TO NORTHWEST ASSISTANCE MINISTRIES.
