25th Black History Month Kick-Off Brunch

Award winning playwright, actress, and MacArthur 'Genius' Grant winner, Anna Deavere Smith will discuss equality and race issues in the academic community in a lecture titled: 'Forty Years Wandering in the Academic Desert: Does Anyone See the Promised Land?'. Anna Deavere Smith's career covers mainstream culture as well as academia. Her work in the theater explores American character and our multifaceted national identity. Smith's works include Fires in the Mirror, Twilight: Los Angeles, and the current off-Broadway play Let Me Down Easy. She is also known for her film and TV work, including a role on the NBC series The West Wing.

Rock the House!

Join us for lectures on the pioneers of the Blackdom community and the African-American experience in New Mexico at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 31, in the New Mexico History Museum Auditorium. As a special treat, the Afro-Gospel Praise Experience will perform a mixture of Afro-Latin rhythms and traditional gospel music throughout the program.

UNM Africana Studies Day in Hobbs

Since UNM is the state's flagship university, we want to reach audiences outside of Bernalillo County. We are particularly interest in developing outreach programs for our pipeline programs to expose youth and their parents in our community to Africana Studies courses and college. We have planned an afternoon of mini lectures by Africana Studies Professors and informational sessions on the road to college a representative UNM African American Student Services. We hope that this will become an annual event.

A Message to Youth: From Pain to Power

Daniel Beaty shares his journey-growing up with a father who was a heroin addict & dealer, and a brother who was addicted to crack cocaine-and how he discovered his purpose. This show is geared toward all ages and is specially priced to make it affordable for the entire family. Beaty is an award-winning playwright, actor, singer and composer, who has performed around the world, including his famous work appearing on HBO's Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam and BET's 106 & Park.

Participate in Africana Studies Black History Month Poster Presentation. The exhibition is open to all students grades Kindergarten through 12th. All participants will receive a prize!

Black Cultural Conference

March 4-6, 2010

UNM African American Student Services, UNM Africana Studies Program and the Office of African American Affairs presents UNM's 2010 Black Cultural Conference 'Many Roads, One Destination'. Thursday will feature a Community Revival and Living Legends Presentation at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with Dr. Ralph Douglas West from the Church Without Walls in Houston, Texas. Friday will start with African American Student Day and the Black Student Leadership Conference at UNM and conclude with a Battle of the Bands in the 'Burque (with Fashion Show and Step Show Exhibition) at UNM featuring two renowned high school bands from Los Angeles and Ft. Worth. Conclude our conference with the Onyx Knowledge Bowl and Service Project at UNM on Saturday.
