JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Library Security Officer

Grade: SPS Grade 2

Responsible to: Senior Porter

Directly supervised by: Senior Porter

Job Summary

To provide security for and physical protection of the Cornerstone Building. To ensure that the Building is used responsibly and safely, to provide basic assistance to users of Library Services outside of normal office hours, and to ensure that the Building is left tidy at the end of each day.

Specific duties and responsibilities:

1.  To ensure that only bona fide students and staff members of the University gain access to the Cornerstone Building.

2.  To patrol the building and monitor the CCTV system to ensure that the Cornerstone Building is used responsibly and safely.

3.  To provide a point of contact for users of the Cornerstone Building.

4.  To liaise and coordinate with the library team during handover periods.

5.  To open and close the Library and Cornerstone Building according to prearranged opening hours schedules, including the switching on and off equipment, e.g. photocopiers.

6.  To provide basic assistance to users of the Cornerstone Building, troubleshooting as required, e.g. refilling photocopiers when they run out of paper, answering basic enquiries.

7.  To ensure that all public areas of the Cornerstone Building are left tidy at closing time.

8.  To be fully conversant with the Cornerstone Building’s alarms and security systems including internal and external locks. To operate and reset these systems as required.

9.  To assist colleagues in ensuring that only authorised persons are present on campus and in requesting unauthorised persons to leave.

10.  To complete incident reports, maintenance defects and other documentation as required to ensure the efficient discharge of the duties of the post.

11.  To undertake any other duties as reasonably requested.

12.  To attend appropriate training and staff development sessions, and participate in an annual appraisal process.

13.  To comply with the University’s Health and Safety Policy, legislation and practice.

14.  To maintain professional standards in relationships, including non-discriminatory practices.

15.  To undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required, including administrative duties appropriate to the role.

16.  The post-holder must operate within the guidelines, procedures and regulations of Bishop Grosseteste University.

17.  The post-holder must operate within the University’s Financial Regulations, Diversity and Equality Policy, Race Equality Policy and other relevant policies.

Education/
Qualifications
and Special Training / Good general standard of education. / A first aid certificate (training will be provided if required).
Knowledge and Skills / Good verbal and written communication skills.
Good administrative skills. / Knowledge of security and fire alarms.
Experience / Evidence of experience in some or all of the following:
front of house security; access control; dealing with alarms, meeting and greeting; internal and external site patrols; CCTV monitoring; office duties. / A disciplined employment background in the armed forces, police, prison or fire service.
Experience of working with or around young adults.
Personal attributes / Physically fit, able and alert.
High standard of personal presentation.
A friendly and approachable manner.
Ability to follow prescribed procedures, exercise judgment and discretion.
Ability to work well without supervision.
Ability to interact with unauthorised persons in a firm and professional manner.
