BACKGROUND

Birmingham Sport and Physical Activity Trust (Sport Birmingham) is focussed on improving the lives of young people through sport.We are delivering a new project that is focused on increasing the number of young people engaged in open-access youth provision, with sport being a main driver of this. The overall aim of this project is to provide increased opportunities for young people in identified areas of Birmingham, leading to positive outcomes and better prospects.

JOB TITLE: Youth & Sport Engagement Assistant

REPORTS TO: Youth & Community Management Team

RESPONSIBLE FOR: N/A

BASED:Sport Birmingham offices

JOB OVERVIEW

The Youth & Sport Engagement Assistant will work closely with the Birmingham Sport & Physical Activity Trust team to ensure that delivery is of high quality and meets minimum operating standards. The post holder will specifically join the current team working on our flagship youth engagement project (M.A.D Birmingham), funded through Big Lottery and DCMS, to engage young people in meaningful open access youth provision, with the aim of supportingyoung peopleto develop and have positive prospects for their future. The post holder will work closely with, and be directed by the team of Youth & Sport Engagement Officers.

MAIN CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Deliver sports, individual development and support sessions for young people.
  • Regularly monitor and review the youth provision at specified hub site, feeding into ongoing development plans for each specified hub site.
  • Support the outreach function of the project to engage with a wide variety of young people in different locations, and signpost them to regular activity.
  • Support the development of a Youth Panel thatinforms delivery at each hub site.
  • Pro-actively promote M.A.D Birmingham, including attendance at promotional events.
  • Support and mentor volunteers to ensure the successful delivery of youth provision at the hub sites.
  • Assess the needs of young people, and plan sessions that are engaging for participants.
  • Deliver sports coaching sessions to young people in a variety of settings.
  • Have a responsibility for equipment used during the delivery of session, ensuring it is maintained, clean and safe. To report any defects to line manager immediately.
  • Undertake administrative tasks, maintain effective monitoring systems and compile regular reports to showcase the impact of the funding.
  • Work in partnership with other members of the team to ensure sharing of good practice across hub sites and joined up working towards expansion of the project.
  • Attend regular training and development opportunities to maintain an up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding, health and safety and local policy developments.

The post holder must comply with Birmingham Sport and Physical Activity Trust Health and Safety policy and in particular is required:-

  • To cooperate with their line manager and senior management, to work safely, to comply with health and safety instructions and information and undertake appropriate health and safety training as required

  • To report to their manager any health and safety concerns, hazardous condition or defect in the health and safety arrangements.

Educational / Professional qualifications: / Sport-specific coaching qualifications (min. Level 2)
Multi-sport qualifications
Evidence of professional development courses connected to youth work
Knowledge: / Knowledge of local issues facing young people in Birmingham
Understanding of what motivates young people to take part in sport and physical activity as well as the barriers that prevent participation.
Understand the principles of safeguarding, child protection, cultural awareness, first aid and inclusion within a sports and youth work setting.
Knowledge of current youth work programmes, and their successes/limitations
Skills and
Abilities: / Well-developed communication skills and the ability to motivate and enthuse participants.
Problem solving skills to deal with set-backs and challenges effectively.
Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
Ability to plan, coach and lead successful activity sessions for young people.
Show a positive attitude to work, be approachable and adaptable.
Computer literacy skills – Word, Excel, PowerPoint and emails.
Experience: / Experience of planning sports activity sessions based on demand from young people.
Experience of supporting young people with their personal development.
Experience of direct session delivery that is successful at recruiting and retaining young people as participants.
Experience of delivering sports activity sessions in local schools.
Experience of working in a variety of youth and community settings.
Special Requirements: / This post is exempt from the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. A Disclosure and Barring Service Check will be required prior to appointment.
