Students can only take PAP Mathematics in middle school if they start with PAP Mathematics in sixth grade. Entrance into 6th grade PAP Mathematics and PAP English Language Arts will be determined by a combination of 3 data points: May STAR universal screener, final grade in current math & English language arts class, and raw score on STAAR test.
Pre-Advanced Placement Classes (PAP)
The benefits of Pre-AP courses are numerous! Students and parents should expect courses to be more challenging, take more time, and require a different type of work than regular courses. Students of these courses should expect teachers to require an increased reading load, sophisticated writing assignments and projects, and complex problem solving. Students involved in extra-curricular activities should especially keep this in mind when designing their schedule. Pre-AP courses require energetic, involved and motivated students.
Schedule change requests from Pre-AP to on level after school starts will require the following: parent/teacher conference and a note signed by the parent.
Students who withdraw from the course at semester will not receive the weighted calculation for that semester. In order to receive the weighted calculation for rank and GPA purposes, the student must remain in the course for the entire year.
Students must understand that tutorials may be required in order to be successful in the course.
Students should generally expect homework in each course every day. Up to ½ -1 hour per course per day may be required. Some assignments may take more time for some students.

learning lab class in lieu of an elective class.
All electives choices are requests and NOT guaranteed. However, we will do our best to make your choices work with the rest of your schedule.
DESCRIPTION OF COURSES
Gateway to Technology 1 – Design & Modeling unit: students apply the design process in designing a playground and furniture. Students will also create portfolios to showcase their innovative solutions using Autodesk. Automation and Robotics unit: students learn about mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation, and computer control systems. Students will use the VEX Robotics platform to design, build, and program real-world objects such as traffic lights, toll booths, and robotic arms. (*This class meets the high school graduation requirement for one-half credit of technology.)
Gateway to Technology 2 - Science of Technology unit: students apply physics, chemistry, and nanotechnology to projects such as making ice cream, cleaning up an oil spill, and discovering the properties of nano-materials. Magic of Electrons unit: students explore electricity, the behavior and parts of atoms, and sensing devices. Students learn knowledge and skills in basic circuitry design and examine the impact of electricity in the world around them. (*This class meets the high school graduation requirement for one-half credit of technology.)
Gateway to Technology 3 – Flight and Space unit: students explore the science behind aeronautics and use their knowledge to design, build, and test an airfoil. Custom-built simulation software allows students to experience space travel. Energy & the Environment unit: students explore sustainable solutions to our energy needs and investigate the impact of energy on our lives. They design and model alternative energy sources and evaluate options for reducing energy consumption. (*This class meets the high school graduation requirement for one-half credit of technology.)
Gymnastics/Tennis – As a substitute for athletics or P.E., competitive instructional classes are offered at the Shannon Learning Center for gymnastics and Richland High School Tennis Center for tennis. Parents are responsible for transportation to those facilities. The district will provide bus service from those facilities to our campus. (Pre-enrollment tryouts required.)
Select Art & Select Theatre – Advanced classes offered for 7th and 8th grade students. Teacher recommendation is needed to join either one of these classes. Student registers for regular art or theatre class. If chosen, schedule will be changed.
