Constraints:

Your bird feeder must:

  • Have a capacity of between 4-5 cups of appropriate food (be between 8”x8”x8” and 12”x12”x12”)
  • Prevent the birds from nesting in the feeder
  • Be able to be either hung from a branch, hook, or mounted on a post
  • Have a roof that sheds water away from the food
  • Be able to be opened to fill it with food
  • Be presented to the class.

Deliverables:

  • Poster that includes the following:
  • Three Concept Sketches per team
  • One set of Working Drawings per Team
  • Photo of your bird species
  • Printed information about the species (See Step 1 below)

Adult body size and wingspan of your chosen species

Habitat (where it lives and nests)

Type of food needed (bird seed, bread crumbs, sunflower seeds, etc.)

Below are two sites that you can use to begin collecting data:

  • for general species information.
  • for more specific species information. Use the “Alphabetic Order” drop-down menu and find the species that has been assigned to you, then click the “Detailed Page” tab.

You may also Google your bird species if you have trouble finding enough information from the above sites

STEP 2:

Based on your research, develop three (3) concept sketches of possible solutions to the problem. All three concepts should be on 1 sheet of paper

STEP 3:

Your team must come to a consensus and develop a set of working drawings from your combined ideas. You may choose to develop one idea or combine the best features from several of the team’s ideas into your final idea.

STEP 4:

Your team poster must include the following: the name of the species of your bird, a photo of your bird and information about its habitat, size, food requirements, etc.,your team’s thumbnail sketches, anda working drawing with overall dimensions. You may use autocad/inventor/other software or hand draw your working drawing. You may color your posters.

STEP 5: Create a working bird feeder using the cardboard and tools supplied to you. You may paint your bird feeder

STEP 6:
