BioSoc Committee Minutes – 25th September 2016

Present:Connie Turton, Kara Boyd, Joe Gilmour, Jack Griffiths, Sarah Raymond, Juliet Standbridge and Aidan Bohan-Avery

Vice President

Committee tops have been ordered and should arrive in the next few days. Committee to wear biosoc related merchandise for freshers fair in replacement until they arrive.

Social Secs

‘Go Wild’

Juliet has got the ‘Go Wild’ social event approved and the event will be advertised on Facebook tonight.

The Go Wild social is planned to be at the new PomPom, where forum used to be before it shut.

Gary Vincent is to hand Go Wild tickets to Jack tomorrow morning.

Movie Night

The movie social for the 4th October has been organised and at least one of the committee (Riddhi) will be present, Juliet will try to go as well.

Boat Party

Juliet tried to get the boat party on Friday (ocean night) but sadly the boat wasn’t available for that night. Instead, the boat party is planned for Tuesday 13th December.

To make use of the ocean tickets reserved for this night (the Friday), we will hold a sport social on the 9th instead.

Publicity and Communications

Parenting Scheme

Child forms will be printed out either tonight or tomorrow morning ready to be handed out by committee at Freshers Fair. The parent side of the parenting scheme is nearly complete, just awaiting any last applications by the end of this week (commencing 26th September).

Meet and Greet

An informal meet and greet session will be planned (hopefully sometime between the 19th and 25th), giving enough time for parents to meet their children before the parenting social. A push will be made for parents to actively message their children until the 19th.

Sports Secs

Charity Tournament

Sports dodgeball charity tournament has been sorted – Cory Pitt (president of the uni dodgeball team) will be captain for it.

Joe has said that around £20 will need to be paid for the dodgeball tournament.

Sports Membership

We won’t pursue a separate membership for BioSoc sports because of the rise in general membership prices for this year.

Teams

Joe has confirmed captain names for all sports teams this year.

Kara said that last year there was a big issue with lots of people expressing interest in Men’s football and then not coming to training/matches. Kara, Joe and Sarah discussed pursuing 7-a-side football as an alternative option. Disappointing turnout needs to be addressed as entry to IMS tournament is expensive.

Sports socials

Jake Harrington has said he will be able host the sports socials regardless before. However, this needs to be sorted out as there may be doubts cast about the size of his new house.

The place where alcohol has been bought in the past few years can no longer be used as it no longer accepts students (only businesses). Therefore other options will need to be looked at – we talked about either Costco or Aldi/Lidl.

Freshers Presentation

Discussed who was going to deliver the talk behind each slide at tomorrow’s fresher talk.

Joe has said he will try and talk to Tom Hartman in the morning about adding zoological collections to the BioSoc stall for tomorrow.

Freshers Fair Stall

Everyone except Sarah and Riddhi will attend the talk tomorrow.

Fair lasts from 10-4 tomorrow. Rotadevised to ensure committee members being present on the stall is split equally.

Cash cannot be handled on the Freshers Fair Stall.

Agreement between all of us that we need to push for sports, the (child side of the) parenting scheme and the socials planned in the next two weeks.

The Meet and Greet will be between 4 and 6pm.
