9 -15 Exam Week

141030-1230FINAL EXAMINATION(20% on Chapt. 15, 80% Comprehensive)

The textbook used is a challenging, comprehensive treatise of physiology that cannot be covered completely in a one-semester course. Consequently we will select topics from each chapter for thorough reading and study. These topics will be clarified in each lecture and in a special chapter outline. All outlines and sample examinations are available on BLACKBOARD under Biol 3800 . The textbook is used at many universities because of its thorough scientific discussions of physiological principles. If assigned sections are read carefully, it will provide good support for each lecture. The book will also serve as an excellent future reference.

The 4 Examinations will consist of true/false, multiple choice, matching, and essay questions. All (including the final) will carry equal weight. No examination can be dropped. Makeup exams, when justified, will be oral or written.

COURSE PREREQUISITES: 2 semesters of basic biology; 2 semesters of basic chemistry;1 semester physics

Deadlines for dropping course.

September 02: Schedule Change Deadline

October 07: Last day to drop a course or withdraw from the university with a grade of W. After this date a

grade of WF may be recorded.

October 08:Instructors may drop students with a grade of WF for nonattendance.

November 07: Last day to drop with consent of the instructor.

November 23:Last day for instructor WF drop. After this date an "F" will be assigned.

“The University of North Texas makes reasonable academic accommodation for students with disabilities. Students seeking accommodation must first register with the Office of Disability Accommodation (ODA) to verify their eligibility. If a disability is verified, the ODA will provide you with an accommodation letter to be delivered to faculty to begin a private discussion regarding your specific needs in a course. You may request accommodations at any time, however, ODA notices of accommodation should be provided as early as possible in the semester to avoid any delay in implementation. Note that students must obtain a new letter of accommodation for every semester and must meet with each faculty member prior to implementation in each class. For additional information see the Office of Disability Accommodation website at . You may also contact them by phone at 940.565.4323.”

Practical Guidelines for a Successful Semester

1. Attendance is important. Poor performance is statistically well correlated with poor class attendance.

2. Do not fall behind in your studies. Review the material after each class and coordinate chapter outlines, class notes, and assigned reading in the book.

3. If something is not clear, add it to your "question list". Those lists should be brought to class for a continued discussion of that material. Don't be shy asking questions. There are no stupid questions in physiology.

4. Do not read everything in the book. It has too much material and will serve as a good reference in the future. Read only the assigned sections, but understand them well. Once you have a good understanding of the assigned material you can take trips into unassigned territory.

5. It is often helpful to focus on assigned graphs and figures. Read the legends carefully. They are designed to summate the essence of that figure. For graphs, pay attention to the axes. What is being plotted? Once you think you understand the figure, put the book aside, redraw the graph and discuss what it means (with yourself, in front of a mirror – if necessary).

5. If you have no study partner, try reading out loud and talking to yourself. The formulation of complex material into a series of sentences forces your brain to focus. The auditory information is then reprocessed. This will exercise your circuits and synapses.

6. Speaking of "exercise", you will not learn unless you activate you brain circuitry. It takes time, effort, and will not always be "fun". Everyone knows this to be true about physical exercise, but many of us do not consider the process of learning the same way.

7. Take this course seriously. It is important for your job in the health related fields and it is important to you because YOU are a biological organism and physiology explains how it works.

8. Do not rely on the final exam to pull your grades up. That exam is comprehensive and a good performance depends on how well you understood material on the previous exams.

9. Do not rely on memorizing answers to exams questions from previous semesters. Every exam is new. Although the material is the same, the questions are changed. Aim for understanding, not memorization of answers to specific questions.
