Biography of the speakers

Mathias DEWATRIPONT

Mathias Dewatripont holds a Ph.D. in Economics from HarvardUniversity, 1986. He was Managing Editor of Review of Economic Studies (1990-94) and is still member of its Editorial Board. He was Associate Editor of Econometrica (1996-99), is a Fellow and Council Member of the Econometric Society, and one of the three Programme co-chairs of its World Congress (Seattle 2000). He is Research Director of CEPR, and was outside Director of CGER-Bank (1992-99). He is laureate of the 1998 Francqui Prize. He is part-time Visiting Professor at MIT, and is professor at Université Libre de Bruxelles where he teaches contract theory, industrial organization and banking and finance.

Yves DUMONT

Yves Dumont currently works in the department “Governance and Scientific Advice” under the Directorate General Research at the European Commission. Previously member of the RTD Programme Evaluation Unit in the same Directorate General, he also worked in the former Directorate General Industry. Before joining the Commission in 1995, he worked 3 years for the Belgian Parliament. He holds masters in Public management, International politics and Co-operation with developing countries.

Wolfgang GLÄNZEL

Wolfgang Glänzel works as Senior Research Fellow at the Steunpunt O&O Statistieken at the

Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium), and is also Senior Scientist at the Institute for Research Organisation of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Budapest).

His main research interests are quantitative analyses and models of information processes in scientific research and the theory of probability distributions.

In 1999, he received the Derek deSolla Price Award for outstanding contributions to the quantitative studies of science. He is Co-editor of the journal Scientometrics and Secretary/Treasurer of the International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics.

Jean-Claude GUÉDON

Jean-Claude Guédon is professor at the University of Montréal, department of compared literature. He received his Ph.D. in history of science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and has been visiting professor at John Hopkins University (USA) and Université Louis Pasteur (France) as well as guest professor at the Université Lumière (Lyon, France). He wrote about one hundred publications, including the successful book "La planète cyber – Internet et cyberspace" (Paris, Gallimard-Découvertes, 1996). His current research interests concern the rhetoric of multimedia.

He is member of the steering committee for the Canadian National Site licence Project (CNSLP) that federates 64 research libraries, and Chair of the Advisory Board of experts for the same project. He is member of the Information Sub-Board of the Open Society Institute since 2001 and member of the eIFL.net Board (Electronic Information for Libraries) since 2002. He is signatory to the Budapest, Bethesda and Berlin Declarations on Open Access.

Herbert HRACHOVEC

Herbert Hrachovec teaches at the Department of Philosophy, University of Vienna.

He has held scholarships and visiting appointments at the universities of Oxford (UK), Münster (FGR) Cambridge,Massachusetts (US), Berlin, Essen und Weimar (all FRG), Bergen (NO) as well as Klagenfurt (A) .

Awards for innovative teaching at the University of Vienna in 2001 and 2002.

Area of specialization: Analytic Philosophy, Aesthetics and Media Theory

He is currently deputy chairman of the Department of Philosophy.

Marc IVALDI

Professor of Economics at Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Toulouse, Research Director at Institut D’Economie Industrielle (IDEI), Industrial Organization Programme Director at Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), Marc Ivaldi is specialized in Applied Industrial Organization applying econometric methods for testing theoretical predictions, calibrating demand and cost structures, and evaluating firms’ conduct, market equilibrium and contracts arrangements. He has studied different industries, in particular network industries like telecommunications, energy, transport, software. He is one of the European experts on quantifying the effects of mergers and on empirical methods for competition policy.

Sijbolt J. NOORDA

Since 1 January 2003, Dr S.J.Noorda (1945) has been President of the Board of the Universiteit van Amsterdam and the Hogeschool van Amsterdam. Before that he was President of the Universiteit van Amsterdam
Dr. Noorda served and serves on various boards and committees in the cultural and social domain.
He was chairman of IKON, board member of the NOS, chairman of Film en Wetenschap (Movies and Science) and two colleges.
Currently he is chairman of the KennisKring Amsterdam, chairman of the Supervisory Board of the AMC-UvA and the Supervisory Board of the DigitalUniversity, and the Holland Festival.

Miha PETERNEL

Miha Peternel was born in 1974. He holds a M.Sc. and B.Sc. in computer and information science from University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. His professional experience in software development includes emulation software, 3D computer games, networking software and industrial visual inspection. He is currently a Ph.D. student employed as a technical assistant in Computer Vision Laboratory, Faculty of Computer and Information Science, University of Ljubljana. His main research interest is visual learning and recognition of human motion. He is also responsible for web publications and publication database of Faculty of Computer and Information Science.

Georg WINCKLER

Born September27, 1943, in Ostrava (CzechRepublic), married, two children, Austrian citizenship. Studied at PrincetonUniversity and University of Vienna (Dr., 1968).

Since 1978, (full) professor of economics at University of Vienna, specialized in monetary economics, applied economics. Visiting professorships at Georgetown University (USA), University of Fribourg (Switzerland), University of Bratislava (Slovakia) and other places. He worked at Saint GobainS.A. (France) and at the International Monetary Fund (Washington, D.C.).

Since October 1999, Rector of the University of Vienna; since January 2000 President of the Austrian Rectors' Conference.

Since April 2001, Member of the Board of the EuropeanUniversity Association.

Since June 2004, Member of EURAB/EU Commission.
