/ As-Salaamu' Alaikum wa'Rahman tu'Llahi wa'berta khatu Jami'aan,
From - did a search of "mustache" and got the following in regards to a question raised...
Since it is obligatory on Muslims to following the commands of the Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and give him peace, as the previously mentioned verses from Qur'an clearly state, all Muslims should make every effort to comply with and maintain the characteristics of fitrah as described by God's Messenger, may God bless him and give him peace, when he said: "Five practices are characteristics of the fitrah: circumcision, shaving the pubic hairs, cutting the mustaches short, clipping the nails and plucking the hair of the armpits." (Reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.) This same saying of God's Messenger is further elaborated upon in Sahih Muslim, where 'Aisha, may God be pleased with her, reports that the Messenger of God, may God bless him and give him peace, said:
"Ten are the practices of fitrah: clipping the mustache, letting the beard grow, using the tooth-stick (siwaak), snuffing water up the nose, cutting the nails, washing the finger joints, plucking the hair under the armpits, shaving the pubic hairs and cleaning one's private parts with water." The narrator said: 'I have forgotten the tenth, but it may have been rinsing the mouth.'
Barak Allahu'feekum Jami'aan, when a man from the rijaal, trims his mustache how is it to be trimmed? Only trimming the bottom of the mustache?? Is is permissible to trim the top and the bottom of the mustache??? Trimming the mustache to the point where the mustache is faded-out, or trimmed very thin w/o the beard being touched by not even a hair, is this permissible????
Baarak-Allaahu Feekum - wa sal-Allaahu wa-sallam 'alaa Nabiyyinaa Muhammad,
was-Salaam 'alaykum wa-Rahmatullaahe wa-Barakaatuh.

/ As-Salaamu' Alaikum Salafiyoon,
A brother of ours mentioned to me a narration of on of the Khulafaa'Ar-Rashideen (Rahim'ahu'Llahu'ta'Ala), I think it was Uthmaan Ibn'Af'aan, who put a miswak up to his lip and of the miswak what fell below the miswak he cut. The brother referenced to me as to that he did not cut the top part of the mustache. Does anyone have access to this hadith with an authentic isnaad or a hadith that deems it impermissible to cut the top part of the mustache?

Assalaamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh!
I just wanted to add some information to the topic:
/ quote:
Imaam Maalik's Muwatta Book 49, Hadeeth # 49.3.4:
Yahyaa related to me from Maalik from Yahyaa ibn Sa'eed that Sa'eed ibn al-Musayyub said, "Ibraheem, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was the first to give hospitality to the guest and the first person to be circumcised and the first person to trim the moustache and the first person to see grey hair. He said, 'O Lord! What is this?' Allah the Blessed, the Exalted, said, 'It is dignity, Ibraheem.' He said, 'Lord, increase me in dignity!' "
Yahyaa said that he had heard Maalik say, "One takes from the moustache until the edge of the lip appears, that is the rim. One does not cut if off completely so that one mutilates oneself." And this is why one should NOT shave the moustache as Imaam Maalik was asked about the person who completely shaves his moustache, he said that he sees that he should be beaten up, he also said that this is an innovation that appeared between people. [Narrated by Al-Bayhaqi, also mentioned in Fath Al-Bari, 10/347].
/ quote:
Sahih Al-Bukhari Volume 7, Book 72, Hadith # 780:
It is narrated about Ibn 'Umar (Radhiallaahu 'anh) "Ibn 'Umar used to cut his moustache so short that the whiteness of his skin (above the upper lip) was visible."
