Bikeability Training

Chesterfield based company Wheely Fun Wheels has been commissioned by North East Derbyshire School Sport Partnership to provide Bikeability Level 2 training at our school. This is an exciting opportunity for your child to take part in training for this life skill.

All instructors are qualified National Standard Cycling Instructors, have DBS checks, insurance and first aid certificates. All instructors are long term regular cyclists too. Instructor to pupil ratio will be a maximum of 1:6 when training on roads. 01246 520820

What will the children need?

Children enjoy cycling and of course it brings many health benefits, develops confidence and gives them independence. Children who have been trained are much safer and, in addition, tend to cycle more.Training includes a short session on the school playground during which instructors will assess each child to see if they are suitable to progress to the on-road training. Children need an ability to ride their bike unaided in a straight line, round corners and be able to ride with one hand.

A working bike which must have TWO working brakes, inflated tyres and the correct size.

A CE marked helmet, a motorcycle type full face helmet is not acceptable. We can supply helmets during training if required (see consent form below).

Training will take place in all weather, please ensure your child is dressed adequately and has a waterproof. Gloves are useful at any time of the year to keep hands warm and prevent injury.

What will the children be doing?

Initial session …

Safety check all bikes and helmets. The instructors will use the recognised ‘M’ check procedure to make sure bikes are suitable for training. Simple faults may be fixed by the instructors.

Perform an assessment of their basic handling skills in the school grounds.

Instructors may decide it is not appropriate for a child to continue past this Level 1 stage because of ability or behaviour. Instructors decision on whether a child will be safe to continue with the on road training will be final and will take into account the whole groups safety.

Subsequent sessions …

Briefly check all bikes again.

We will be out riding on local roads where we will be practicing road positioning, observation and safe manoeuvring.

What can you do to help?

Please talk to us or the school if you have any questions, or concerns.

Make sure that they’re comfortable on the bike that they’re riding. Sometimes a brand new bike doesn’t help with on-road confidence.

Help them practice basic skills, such as riding slowly in a straight line, being able to look over their shoulder (without wobbling) and riding whilst signalling (left and right arm). Just twenty minutes a week will help enormously.

Special Needs and Behaviour - We need to be informed if any child has any particular need e.g. Asthma, ADHD, dyspraxia, Asperger’s syndrome, hearing impairment or specific behavioural difficulties prior to the start of the course. Wheely Fun Wheels instructors reserve the right to refuse to take a child onto roads where, in the professional judgement of the instructor, the child’s behaviour presents a risk to their, or other children’s safety.

Child Protection and Safeguarding: Wheely Fun Wheels has a child protection policy and its instructors have DBS enhanced disclosures.

Please complete and return the attached consent form to school. Verbal parental consent is not sufficient.
