The Big Nasty Hillclimb…the Nastiness Has Begun!

Professional motorcycle hillclimbing returned to the Northwest for the first time in many years as the Big NastyHillclimb sprang to life at the Owyhee Motorcycle Clubgrounds (OMC) in Boise, Idaho. Idaho hadn’t seen a professional (or amateur for that matter) hillclimb since 1975, so excitement was high to see its return to the region, and so it did on June 9-10, 2001. An impressive 422 entries were recorded from nine states and an equally-impressive 2,500 spectators attended, starting a Big Nasty tradition that will surely only grow in the future.

Nowadays, with ever-improving technology and riding techniques, most hillclimbs have almost become uphill drag races. The winner is the one with the quickest time over the hill, especially in the eastern U.S. which is where the majority of hillclimbs are currently held. The smaller number of climbs out west are generally on rougher, more technical hills, but even so you can count on at least a few of the top riders to conquer them.

But not always.

The 410-foot crest of The Big Nasty remained virgin despite the best efforts of 37 determined competitors in the premier Open Exhibition class going for the major share of the $10,000 purse. Montana's Dusty Beer got closest on his 1428cc Kawasaki with his second-run effort of 362 feet. That gave the defending series champ a perfect two for two in the class in the 2001 FMF/NAHA Championship Hillclimb Series, with three rounds still to come.

Yamaha FJ1200-mounted Travis Whitlock ended up second best in the class with his first run of 340 feet. However, he didn't go back to Colorado completely shut out, as he beat Beer in two other classes: 250cc Exhibition and Open Pro Altered. Pete Loomis rounded out the top three in Open Exhibition, and he borrowed Beer's bike to do it.

Just why was the hill so……nasty?

The hill was simply breathtakingly steep. At a glance the hill appeared simple, but close examination revealed it to be much trickier. After a hard-packed start area, riders slammed into a extremely-steep slope, which was soft and deep-probably the most difficult characteristic to deal with all the way up. About a third of the way up the hill, riders had to negotiate a road cut across the face of the hill then resume their attack above the road. Near the top, the hill got even steeper. Again, the almost silt-like composition of the dirt on the sage-covered hill proved to be the most difficult factor of all.

Leading up to the runs up the Exhibition hill, though, were two other hills which proved nearly as formidable. Travis Whitlock's first run of 17.11 seconds up the Altered hill was good enough for the Open Pro Altered victory, giving him added confidence going into the next day's program. Even the trophy hill proved too much for all but two riders: Chris Steagall and Russell McCoy, the winner (12.66 seconds) and runner-up (13.49), respectively, in the 500cc Vet Altered class. But The Big Nasty was a different story.

Most of the concern centered on the road cut, with the riders examining it carefully and plotting strategy. The big question here was whether or not to try jumping it.

"We'd all talked about trying to jump the road, but we figured it'd take a couple of rides to kind of mellow the lip," Beer said. "The take-off wasn't quite right; it was a little bit too steep of an approach-it would throw you more high than it would far."

The first few riders didn't even attempt to jump the gap, but they did create a few different lines on the approach. By the time Beer's turn in the order came, he was confident he could jump it so he kept his momentum approaching the jump.

"It didn't feel that far to me," Beer said of the gap, "but I actually took off about five feet below the lip. [Kenny Kimball] said I landed about 10 feet on the [high] side of the road so it was probably about 30 or 40 feet [of distance jumped].

One thing [I did was] I did lift because I was worried about the steepness of the approach, so I did come into it with the front end up, which absorbs some of the energy of the bump so instead of throwing you up, it throws you far. The other thing I wanted to do was when I landed, I still wanted the front end to be up, just landing on the rear wheel. Actually, that's what worked. You don't want the front end dropping. The ultimate thing to happen is go over something like that, land on the back wheel, and the front wheel just stays in the air for another 50 feet."

Beer didn't enjoy that ultimate ride, but his jump did get him to the high side of the road with lots of momentum, though the deep silt quickly killed that and ended his run after 360 feet. At that point, he was 20 feet higher than Whitlock, who was 38 feet higher Kimball.

With the hill deteriorating quickly, Beer's lead in all likelihood would remain safe. Still, even with the win all but assured, Beer decided to take his second run in order to try to top The Big Nasty.

"The second run, I was just wide open, having fun, letting it all hang out," he said. "I just wanted to put a track over; I didn't care what happened. But I was banzai-ing pretty hard the second run."

It got him two feet higher, but it wasn't good enough, and The Big Nasty remained-uniquely-unconquered. Of course, that just makes these guys more determined to get another shot at it next year.

"More than anything, I just wanted to put a track over," Beer revealed. "It's like they've been preaching The Big Nasty, Big Nasty, Big Nasty. I didn't want to walk out of here with no track over the hill. Unfortunately, that's what happened. That's why our sport's so cool, is that challenge. It's not just always a drag race; it's a challenge. Next year conditions might be a little bit different, and then somebody's going to sneak a track over that-and the place will go nuts. And that will be pretty cool."
