Bidding of CM3291 and CM3292 in Year 3

Summary

  1. Bidding for both CM3291 and CM3292 in one semester is NOT encouraged by Department of Chemistry.
  2. In CORS bidding Round 1A and 1B, one student can ONLY bid either CM3291 or CM3292 but NOT both.
  3. If a student plans to bid for both CM3291 and CM3292 from Round 1C/Round 2A onwards, an application form must be submitted before Round 1C/Round 2A. Note the bidding outcome is subjected to available vacancy left after Round 1A and 1B.
  4. Additional sessions are offered in Special Semester I (tentatively CM3291) and Special Semester II(tentatively CM3292) for SEP students and students need more flexible study plan. Registration for Special Semesters will be manual.

Dear Year 2 Chemistry Major Students,

In your Year 3, you will need to read your last two compulsory core modules: CM3291 (Advanced Experiments in Organic & Inorganic Chemistry) and CM3292 (Advanced Experiments in Analytical & Physical Chemistry).

Some students already start to check the timetable of these two experiment modules for his/her own timetable and study plan. It is good as these students have shown that they are responsible for their own academic life in NUS and we would encourage all students to schedule your study plan as early as possible.

To facilitate your study plan, department Teaching Committee decides to inform your cohort early on the arrangement/schedule of CM3291 and CM3292:

  1. Both CM3291 and CM3292 are compulsory modules for Chemistry Major Students.
  2. Both CM3291 and CM3292 are offered in Semester 1 and Semester 2; CM3291 is also tentatively offered in Semester 3 (Special Semester I); CM3292 is also tentatively offered in Semester 4 (Special Semester II).
  3. All the other Level 3 chemistry modules are elective modules.
  4. Considering the heavy workload of CM3291 and CM3292, it is NOT encouraged for students to take both CM3291 and CM3292 within the same semester.
  5. Although the quota for each module is limited by the space in the lab, Department has put in effort and resources to ensure that the quota is enough for each student to take ONE experiment module per semester. The quota, however, is insufficient for each student to take both experiment modules in the same semester.
  6. To “protect” each student an equal opportunity to bid for one experiment module per semester, CORS configuration will allow student to bid for ONLY ONE experiment module in Round 1A and 1B.
  7. From Round 1C/Round 2A onwards, bidding for both experiment modules is allowed. For configuration on the system, students who plan to bid for both modules need to register in person before Round 1C/Round 2A at General Office, Department of Chemistry.
  8. To avoid delay of graduation, plan early and bid wisely during bidding period.
  9. It is not recommended to take both modules in the last semester just before graduation / honours because it is too risky. In the case all vacancies are taken during Round 1A and 1B, you will not be able to get both modules and have to delay your graduation.
  10. On top of the quota during Semester 1 and 2 (already sufficient for the cohort), Department has offered extra sessions during Special Semesters, for SEP students and other students who need a more flexible study plan.
  11. Registration of experiment modules for Special Semesters will be carried out by Manual Registration and priority will be given in this order to: 1) students going for SEP; 2) students coming back from SEP; 3) Year 3 students; 4) Year 2 students and other students.
  12. General rules governing module bidding/registration in NUS also apply, e.g. fulfillment of pre-requisite, cap of five modules before certain round on CORS, etc.
  13. Please read through this announcement thoroughly before you ask any questions to department or any staff in the department, either via email or through phone call.
