Present: Ken Lefler, Officer Alan Strong, Emily Robnett, Wayne Fett, Liz Christiansen, Robin Hayward, Heidi Bohall, John Fuller, Joshua Smith, Ingrid Anderson, Sara Walz

Committee President Emily Robnett welcomed everyone and asked for any items members wished to bring up. The group discussed alternative meeting days and times, but the consensus was that the regular meeting time (the second Tuesday of the month at 8 AM) would remain for now.

BFU Signage Recommendations – Liz reported that Michelle Ribble had presented the proposal for new signage locations to the Campus Planning Committee (CPC) meeting last Monday, June 1. Good news! The CPC approved all the recommended locations, below:

In addition:

-The group wants to use the 18”x18” signs; they felt the bigger signs would be easier to read.

-The group suggested using the 12”x12” signs for branding purposes; they discussed using smaller signs throughout campus for general awareness. One suggestion was on the Iowa Avenue bridge.

-The group would like the sign for the bike trail south of the Burlington Street bridge to be near Hwy 6 instead of the trail.

The BAC discussed the following locations for “branding” signs: at bike repair stations, TA Clearly Walkway, outside the President’s office, at the IMU, east and west side dining halls, outside the Main Library at the bus stop, and at the Learning Commons. John suggested that the goal should be to get the larger, way-finding signs in place first (before RAGBRAI) and then return to the CPC with a recommendation for branding sign locations.

After the last BAC meeting, Anne Duggan had suggested hanging a banner that showcased both the City and the UI’s bicycle-friendly status. Liz will follow up with City staff.

Heidi asked if the BFU signs could be modified to include a web address. Liz will check with Michelle to see if that’s possible. Maybe the bike.uiowa.eduaddress could fit on the lower part of the sign.

Summer Orientation Table – There are several opportunities to volunteer at the BAC orientation table in the next several weeks. Liz will send out time slots available, along with talking points. Please coordinate times with George McCrory.

Bike Share Update – Liz reported that the first step of the bike share project is underway. The City of Iowa City will have a resolution at the July council meeting that must be adopted in order to start the development of the contract. The resolution includes the commitment of local match and acknowledgement of responsibility for equipment and maintenance. Liz asked the UI General Counsel office to review the resolution because it did include references to the UI. Willy has been gathering sample bike share RFP’s.

Bike Survey – No report.

Review of Priorities for 2014-2015– The group reviewed the priorities for action for 2014-2015. Highlights included:

-Safety - Emily asked for a safety committee meeting to be scheduled.

-Bicycle Master Plan - John said that the goal is to present the plan to the UI President before August.

-Outreach – George McCrory will be presenting a concept for a Fall Bike Challenge.

-Building Partnerships – Ken will reach out to the president of BIC.

-Recruiting – Liz will reach out to the Facilities Management Planning, Design and Construction unit and Heidi recommended a graduate student who works in her office. Josh said he would check with the new Staff Council members.

Next Meeting – Tuesday, July 14 at 8 AM, 1680 UCC (Office of Sustainability).
