AP Lang syllabus Update for Second Semester - 2017

  1. Locate the class blog and save it as a favorite! are responsible for anything on the website, even if I forget to say it in class. You never know; there may be incentives for checking! Make a note of my contact information: .
  1. We’llbegin this semester with a study of memoir. You may have anticipated this with my asking you to get a copy of Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt. (If you haven’t already purchased one or checked one out, do so immediately).  I suggest bringing Angela’s Ashes to class dailyuntil we’re finished with it –you might have reading time!Your first reading assessment for chapters 1-4 will take place on January 12th. We will also be writing a tiny memoir and a longer personal narrative as the first writing assignments of the semester.
  1. As usual, I hope you’ll consider donating notebook paper (college ruled) to the class and also some tissues. We’ll be using even more paper this semester for more frequent essay practice.
  1. You should NEVER have your cell phone out unless I say it’s okay.
  1. You’ll need to get a copy of The Things They Carriedby Tim O’Brien– we’ll read that soon (after Angela’s Ashes).
  1. You should replenish your supplies of notebook paper, highlighters, 3 X 5 index cards, pencils and pens, maybe post-it notes, too. **Your AP Lang handbook should be in the notebook you bring to class daily.
  1. Vocabulary begins Monday, January 9thwith the quiz over week 1words. The word list is on the blog if you misplace the copy I give you today. ** Cards for week one will be due 1/6 (tomorrow).
  1. You will be writing in class pretty much every week. Please come prepared (with a pen) and make sure you have MLA formatting solidly in your mind and you use it. (No name in the right hand corner eliminating other required information, etc.; this was still happening on the final.)
  1. You will be using USATestPrep for the American Lit EOC prep, so stay tuned for details about that. Our EOC is currently scheduled for May 1-3. This is 20% of your grade.
  1. The AP Lang Exam is Wednesday, May 10th. You can register beginning January 23rd (ends March 3rd) via the link on the LHS website. The exam costs $93 per exam (AP seminar is $141) plus a one-time $20 testing/admin feel.
  1. Reading is Fundamental will continue this semester with the added component of Monday discussions about what you are reading. Don’t forget your extra credit RIF is due Wednesday, January 11th. We will begin the “regular” RIF on January 9th when you will get a new chart. NO RIFS WILL BE ACCEPTED LATE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. It is your responsibility to place it into my hands at the beginning of class the day you return if you are absent the day it is due.
  1. LHS is providing review sessions prior to the upcoming SATs and the ACTs. Please notice where I have the schedule posted over the bookshelf in the front of the room.

We’re going to have a great semester. I am really looking forward to it!
