What will I be doing? (contribution statement)

The post holder willcarry out yard duties at the Equestrian Centre. This will include a range of duties in order to care for the horses liveried at the Centre, supervise and support the student activities. The work will directly link tocommercial and curriculum activities and will support the day to day routine.

Responsibilities and Key Tasks:

  1. To liaise with the Team Leader and the Yard Managerto ensure that the Centre provides an appropriate environment for students and horses.
  2. To work as part of the Equestrian Centre Team in the operational responsibilities for the day to day routines.
  3. To assist with the commercial activities and support the Centre’s portfolio of events.
  4. Show a flexible and approachable manner at all times.
  5. Work weekends, evenings and bank holidays as appropriate to the rota.
  6. To assist in the growth of the economic viability and efficiency of the Centre.
  7. To ensure that the Centre operates with due regard to Health and Safety and the college sustainability policy.
  8. Carry out basic maintenance and communicate with the Campus Manager to ensure all resources are in good working order and are safe.
  9. To drive the college tractor and vehicles if necessary.
  10. To communicate verbally and electronically with the Equine Team on all activities taking place at the Centre.
  11. To bring with you drive and enthusiasm to motivate and engage students in a practical environment whilst preparing them for the Equine Industry.
  12. To promote links within the Equine Industry and seek to develop good working relationships.
  13. To provide a professional image at all times and set high standards as an individual and for others to follow.
  14. To undertake such staff training as is agreed to be necessary for the development of the role and the individual.
  15. To work with other staff to standards that ensure the overall service complies with the College’s Quality Assurance Systems, the requirements of external accreditation bodies and auditing criteria.
  16. To undertake such other duties and meet the responsibilities as identified in the College’s Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity Policies.
  17. To work with the College’s staff policies and procedures framework and to ensure these are correctly applied.
  18. To carry out other duties as may be assigned by the Principal, which are appropriate to the post and the work of the College.

Person Specification

ESSENTIALS / DESIRABLES
  • A level 2 Equine related qualification e.g. NVQ/WBD, BHS
  • Experience of caring for horses in a busy environment.
  • Experience of supervising others in a practical context.
  • Ability to exercise horses from the ground e.g. Horse Walker, Lungeing.
  • Good communication and organisational skills, flexible, reliable, ability to meet targets and deadlines
  • Knowledge of appropriate Health and Safety requirements
  • Full driving licence and personal transport
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team and confident to work on own
  • Demonstrate professionalism to students, external customers and liveries
  • Able to assist with horse health emergencies and day to day horse management
  • A willingness to develop skills to meet the personal specification requirements

  • A level 3 Equine related qualification e.g. BHS, EDHM or NVQ/WBD.
  • Teaching/Instructing experience
  • Level 2 Literacy & Numeracy
  • Demonstrate recent attendance to CPD within the Equine Industry
  • First Aid at work Certificate
  • Appropriate certificates of competence (eg NPTC/LANTRA)
  • Certificate of competence in the Transport of Animals by Road (short journeys)
  • A towing licence
  • Ability to school horses on the flat, over fences and from the ground
