RVIC2000 (American Revised Version, Improved and Corrected)DANIEL

1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judahcame [1]Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besiegedit. 2 And [2]Jehovah gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God;and he carried them into theland of [3]Shinar to the house of his god: and he brought the vessels into the treasure-house of his god. 3And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring in certain of the children of Israel, even of the seed royal and of thenobles; 4youths in whom was no blemish, but well-favored, and skilful in all wisdom, and endued with knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability to stand in the king’s palace;and that he should teach them the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans. 5And the king appointed for them a daily portion of the king’s dainties, and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years;that at the end thereof they should stand before theking. 6Now among these were,of the children of Judah, Daniel,Hananiah,Mishael, and Azariah. 7 And the prince of theeunuchs gave names unto them:unto Daniel he gave the name of Bel-teshazzar;and to Hananiah,ofShadrach;and to Mishael,ofMeshach;and to Azariah,ofAbed-nego.

8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s dainties, nor with the wine which he drank:therefore he requested of the prince of theeunuchs that he might not defile himself. 9Now God made Daniel to find kindness and compassion in thesight of the prince of theeunuchs. 10And the prince of theeunuchs said unto Daniel, Ifear my lord theking, who hath appointed your food and your drink:for why should he see your faces worse looking than theyouths that are of your own age?so would ye endanger my head with theking. 11Then said Daniel to [4]the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs hadappointedoverDaniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: 12 Prove thy servants,I beseech thee, ten days;and let them give us [5]pulse to eat,and water to drink. 13 Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of theyouths that eat of the king’s dainties;and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.

14 So he hearkened unto them in this matter, and proved them ten days. 15 And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer, and they were fatter in flesh, than all theyouths that did eat of the king’s dainties. 16 So thesteward took away their dainties, and the wine that they should drink, and gave them pulse.

17 Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. 18And at the end of the days which the king had [6]appointed for bringing them in,the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. 19 And theking communed with them;and among them all was found none like Daniel,Hananiah,Mishael, and Azariah:therefore stood they before theking. 20And in every matter of wisdom and understanding, concerning which theking inquired of them,he found them ten times better than all themagicians andenchanters that were in all his realm. 21 And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.

2 And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar,Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams;and his spirit was troubled, and his sleep went from him. 2 Then theking commanded to call the magicians, and theenchanters, and thesorcerers, and theChaldeans,to tell theking his dreams. So they came in and stood before theking. 3 And theking said unto them,I have dreamed adream, and my spirit is troubled to know thedream. 4 Then spake the Chaldeans to theking [7]in the Syrian language,

[8]Oking,[9]live forever:tell thyservants thedream, and we will show theinterpretation. 5 Theking answered and said to theChaldeans, [10]Thething is gone from me:if ye make not known unto me thedream and the interpretation thereof, [11]ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made adunghill. 6 But if ye show the dream and the interpretation thereof,ye shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honor: therefore show me thedream and the interpretation thereof. 7 They answered the second time and said,Let theking tell his servants thedream, and we will show the interpretation. 8 Theking answered and said,Iknow of acertaintythat ye would [12]gain time, because ye see [13]thething is gone from me. 9 But if ye make not known unto me thedream, there is but one law for you;for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me,till thetime be changed:therefore tell me thedream, and I shall know that ye can show me the interpretation thereof. 10The Chaldeans answered before theking, and said,There is not aman upon theearth that can show the king’s matter, forasmuch as no king, [14]lord,or ruler, hath asked such athing of any magician,or enchanter,or Chaldean. 11 And it is a rare thing that theking requireth, and there is no other that can show it before theking, except thegods, whose dwelling is not with flesh. 12 For this cause theking was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon. 13 So thedecree went forth, and the wise men were to beslain;and they sought Daniel and his companions to beslain.

14 Then Daniel returned answer with counsel and prudence to [15]Arioch the captain of the king’s guard, who was gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon; 15he answered and said to Arioch the king’s captain, Wherefore is thedecree so urgent from theking? Then Arioch made thething known to Daniel. 16And Daniel went in,and desired of theking that he would [16]appoint him atime, [17]and he would show theking the interpretation.

17 Then Daniel went to hishouse, and made thething known to Hananiah,Mishael, and Azariah, his companions: 18 that they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret;that Daniel and his companions should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 Then was thesecret revealed unto Daniel in avision of thenight. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven. 20 Daniel answered and said,Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever;for wisdom and might are his. 21 And he changeth the times and theseasons;he removeth kings, and setteth up kings;he giveth wisdom unto thewise, and knowledge to them that have understanding; 22he revealeth the deep and secret things;he knoweth what is in thedarkness, and thelight dwelleth with him. 23Ithank thee, and praise thee,O thou God of my fathers, who hast givenme wisdom and might, and hast now made known unto me what we desired of thee;for thou hast made known unto us the king’s matter. 24Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon;he went and said thus unto him:Destroy not the wise men of Babylon;bring me in before theking, and I will show unto theking the interpretation.

25 Then Arioch brought in Daniel before theking in haste, and said thus unto him, I have found aman of the children of thecaptivity of Judah, that will make known unto theking theinterpretation. 26 Theking answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Bel-teshazzar,Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen, and the interpretation thereof? 27 Daniel answered before theking, and said,Thesecret which theking hath demanded can neither wise men, enchanters, magicians, nor soothsayers, show unto theking; 28 but there is aGod in heaven that revealeth secrets, and he hath made known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these: 29 as for thee,O king, thy thoughts came into thy mind upon thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter;and he that revealeth secrets hath made known to thee what shall come to pass. 30 But as for me,this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but to the intent that the interpretation may be made known to theking, and that thou mayest know the thoughts of thy heart.

31 [18]Thou,O king, sawest, and, behold,a great image. This image, which was mighty, and whose [19]brightness was excellent, stood before thee;and the aspect thereof was fearful. 32 As for this image, its head was of fine gold, its breast and its arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of copper, 33 its legs of iron, its feet part of iron, and part of clay. 34 Thou sawest till that astone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon its feet that were of theiron and clay, and brake them in pieces. 35 Then was theiron, theclay, thecopper, thesilver, and thegold, broken in pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing-floors;and thewind carried them away,so that no place was found for them:and thestone that smote theimage became a great [20]mountain,and filled the whole earth.

36 This is thedream;and we will tell the interpretation thereof before theking. 37 Thou,O king, artking of kings, unto whom the God of heaven hath given thekingdom, thepower, and thestrength, and theglory; 38 and wheresoever thechildren of men dwell, the beasts of thefieldand the birds of the heavens hath he given into thy hand, and hath made thee to rule over them all: [21]thou artthehead of gold. 39And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee;and another third [22]kingdom of copper, which shall bear rule over all theearth. 40 And the fourth kingdom shall be [23]strong as iron, forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things;and as iron that crusheth all these, shall it break in pieces and crush.[24] 41And whereas thou sawest thefeet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron,it shall be a divided kingdom;but there shall be in it of thestrength of theiron, forasmuch as thou sawest theiron mixed with [25]miry clay. 42 And as the toes of thefeet were part of iron, and part of clay,so thekingdom shall be partly strong, and partly [26]brittle. 43 And whereas thou sawest theiron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves [27]with theseed of men;but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron doth not mingle with clay. 44 And in the days of those kings shall the God of heaven set up akingdom which shall never be destroyed, nor shall thesovereignty thereof be left to another people;butit shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. 45Forasmuch as thou sawest that [28]astone was cut out of themountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces theiron, thecopper, theclay, thesilver, and thegold;the great God hath made known to theking what shall come to pass hereafter:and thedream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.

46 Then theking Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should pour out an oblation and sweet odors unto him. 47Theking answered unto Daniel, and said,Of atruth your God is the God of gods, and the Lord of kings, and arevealer of secrets, seeing thou hast been able to reveal this secret. 48 Then theking made Daniel great, and gave him many great gifts, and made him to rule over the whole province of Babylon, and to be chief governor over all the wise men of Babylon. 49And Daniel requested of theking, and he appointed Shadrach,Meshach, and Abed-nego,over theaffairs of theprovince of Babylon:but Daniel was[29]in the gate of theking.

3[30]Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was[31]sixty cubits, andthe breadth thereof six cubits:he set it up in the plain of Dura,in theprovince of Babylon. 2 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together thesatraps, thedeputies, and thegovernors, the [32]judges,thetreasurers,the counsellors, the [33]sheriffs,and all the rulers of the provinces,to come to the dedication of theimage which Nebuchadnezzar theking had set up. 3 Then the satraps, thedeputies, and thegovernors, thejudges, the treasurers, thecounsellors, thesheriffs, and all the rulers of theprovinces, were gathered together unto the dedication of theimage that Nebuchadnezzar theking had set up;and they stood before theimage that Nebuchadnezzar had set up. 4 Then theherald cried aloud,Toyou itiscommanded,Opeoples, nations, and languages, 5 that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet,flute,harp,sackbut,psaltery,[34]dulcimer, andall kinds of [35]music,ye falldown and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar theking hath set up; 6and whoso falleth not down and worshippethshall the same hour be cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. 7Therefore at that time, when all thepeoples heard the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and all kinds of music, all thepeoples, thenations, and the languages, fell down andworshipped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar theking had set up.

8 Wherefore at that time certain Chaldeans came near, and brought accusation against theJews. 9They answered and said to Nebuchadnezzar theking,Oking, live forever. 10 Thou,O king, hast made adecree, that every man that shall hear thesound of thecornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, shall fall down and worship the golden image; 11and whoso falleth not down and worshippeth, shall be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. 12There are certain Jews whom thou hast appointed over the affairs of theprovince of Babylon:Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego;these men,Oking, have not regarded thee:they serve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

13 Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach,Meshach, and Abed-nego. Then they brought these men before theking. 14Nebuchadnezzar answered and said unto them,Is it of purpose,O Shadrach,Meshach, and Abed-nego,that ye serve not my gods, nor worship the golden image which I have set up? 15 Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of thecornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship theimage which I have made, well:but if ye worship not,ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that god that shall deliver you out of my hands? 16 Shadrach,Meshach, and Abed-nego answered and said to theking,ONebuchadnezzar, [36]we have no need to answer thee in this matter. 17 [37]If it be so,our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace;and he will deliver us out of thy hand,Oking. 18 But if not,be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden imagewhich thou hast set up.

19 Then was Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego:therefore he spake, and commanded that they should heat thefurnace [38]seven times more than it was wont to be heated. 20 And he commanded certain mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach,Meshach, and Abed-nego,and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace. 21 Then these men were bound in their hosen, their [39]tunics,and their mantles, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. 22 Therefore because the king’s commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot, theflame of thefire slew those men that took up Shadrach,Meshach, and Abed-nego. 23And these three men,Shadrach,Meshach, and Abed-nego,fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.

24 Then Nebuchadnezzar theking was astonished, and rose up in haste:he spake and said unto his counsellors,Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of thefire: They answered and said unto the king,True,O king.[40] 25 He answered and said,Lo, Isee four men loose, walking in the midst of thefire, and they have no hurt;and the aspect of thefourth is like ason of the gods. 26 Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the[41]mouth of the burning fiery furnace:he spake andsaid,Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego,ye servants of the Most High God,come forth, and come hither. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego came forth out of the midst of thefire. 27 And thesatraps, thedeputies, and thegovernors, and the king’s counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, that thefire had no power upon their bodies, nor was the hair of their head singed, neither were their hosen changed, nor had the smell of fire passed on them.
