Pattern of hours / The hours covered will consist of one sleepover a week, starting from around 5pm and include the following early morning till around 9am.

2ROLE PURPOSE

The part time Project Assistant (volunteer role) will work as part of a team seeking to meet the practical, emotional and spiritual needs of men with complex needs, including addictions. The Centre provides a supportive environment for 10 men who wish assistance in developing skills and changing behaviours to facilitate a safe, productive and meaningful life in the community.

3MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To work as part of a staff team, covering one sleepover shift a week

  • To give quality support to service users within the Centre

  • To support the Project Working Staff in the day to day running of the unit

  • Ensure a safe environment for service users within the unit/service

4PLANNING AND ORGANISING

  • Be involved in staff handover (at the start and end of shifts)
  • Accompany service users to appointments as required
  • Participate in recreational activities
  • Participate in devotions with staff and lead devotions for residents
  • Cleaning/cooking duties as required
  • Record & update contact files and other relevant documentation as appropriate
  • General administration duties, including answering phones and taking messages
  • Organise and record medication, finances, and various unit Health & Safety requirements as delegated within the team

5 PROBLEM SOLVING

  • Respond with care, sensitivity and understanding to the issues, concerns and complex situations that residents experience and share
  • Ensure the safety of the community in accordance with visiting procedures
  • Report concerns regarding residents’ wellbeing and contribute to agreed team responses. Personal disclosures by service users should be referred to the wider team as Bethany makes use of additional professional services, particularly in very sensitive matters
  • Consult with supervisor regarding training needs and receive monthly supervision
  • Be mindful of personal wellbeing and the limitations of the role, remembering that emotional and physical safety is of paramount importance, and team members are there to help and assist

6DECISION MAKING

  • Take referrals for new resident applications
  • Respond to service user requests for practical items
  • Be aware of potential risks to service user stability and respond appropriately

7KEY RELATIONSHIPS

  • Befriend clients appropriately, being mindful that this is not a support worker role
  • Liaise with other agencies, professionals and the wider organisation as required
  • Develop strong, healthy and appropriate relationships with colleagues contributing to a high level of team work

8KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE NEEDED FOR THE ROLE

The essential qualifications and characteristics that will be required of the person undertaking the role are:

  • Good general standard of education
  • Experience of providing general support to vulnerable people
  • An interest in the service user group and some understanding of homelessness, mental health issues, addiction problems and chaotic behaviour
  • Experience of team working
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Good organisational skills
  • Ability to maintain clear & accurate records and paperwork
  • Willingness and ability to effectively take on board training and guidance
  • Flexibility to respond to a changing environment
  • To be able to show God’s love in action as an outworking of personal Christian faith to all stakeholders

9DIMENSIONS

  • The volunteer will assist project workers and project assistants in the fulfilment of their responsibilities, as delegated by the management
  • The volunteer will have considerable dealings with service users, external agencies and also stakeholders across the Organisation
  • The volunteer will work closely with and report to the management of the Dochas Project

10ROLE CONTEXT AND ANY OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION

The volunteer is required to participate in and occasionally lead Christian worship as part of their volunteer role. They may also be required to respond to questions about the Christian faith from personal experience, in order to support Bethany’s Vision of working with vulnerable people as an expression of Christian love in action.

This role, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme, undertakes regulated work as part of the normal duties and therefore requires an enhanced disclosure and membership of the PVG scheme by the volunteer. There is a Risk Assessment for ‘harm and risk of harm’ attached to this role description.

This role requires the volunteer to sign the BCT Volunteer Confidentiality Statement.
