Course Description
High School Chemistry is designed to engage students in the science of matter. Chemistry I will elaborate upon the concepts discussed in 9th grade Integrated Science and will provide laboratory activities to reinforce these concepts. Content covered in the course will reflect ACT Quality Core and Next Generation Science Standards to prepare students for success in college chemistry.
Course Objectives
- Build knowledge of the structure of chemistry
- Analyze scientific concepts and think critically
- Review the importance and relevance of chemistry in our everyday lives
- Utilize the methods of science as a logical means of problem solving
UNITS OF STUDY
Scope and Sequence for the course will be as follows:
Science Skills/Conversions, Matter: Properties and States, Atomic Structure, Electron Structure, Wave Properties, The Periodic Table, Chemical Bonding, Chemical Reactions, The Mole, Stoichiometry, Reaction Rates, Chemical Equilibrium, Acids and Bases.
MATERIALS NEEDED
3-ring binder with sections OR 3 subject notebook, college ruled with pockets or folder
Scientific calculator
Pencil and/or pen
Markers or colored pencils
A resource textbook will be supplied
COURSE POLICIES
Attendance/Absences/Makeup Work:
Chemistry is a sequential course and concepts build on previous concepts. Therefore attendance is very important.
If absent:
-Pick up any worksheets or handouts in the folder file for your designated period.
-Check with another student for any notes taken during your absence and bellringer entry.
-Never disrupt class to ask for assignments. See me before or after class.
-Assignments due on the day student was absent will be due the day the student returns unless negotiated with teacher.
-Make-up assignments are due in a timely manner. Students are allotted the number of days the student was absent plus one as stated in the student handbook.
-Make-ups for tests are completed after school and by appointment within two weeks of absence.
Classroom Rules/Expectations:
Students are expected to follow the student handbook and Pirate Guidelines at all time. Students are expected to be on time, be prepared, be respectful, be on task and be responsible. See Classroom Expectation handouts for more detail regarding classroom procedures.
Homework Policy:
-All work is due at the beginning of the class following the day assigned, unless otherwise specified.
-Problems which involve math must show full process in order to receive full credit.
-Any student caught cheating or plagiarizing on any homework, tests or assignment for class will receive a zero for the work. A zero will also be given to any student who permits another student to cheat off their paper.
GRADING POLICY
The grading scale for the class is as follows:
90-100% A, 80-89% B, 70-79% C, 60-69% D, 0 - 59% F
Students will be graded based on mastery of objectives and content standards, lab activities, bellringers, homework and projects. Each term grade will be calculated 80% assessment and application assignments and 20% practice assignments.
Major tests will be given at the end of each unit of study. Quizzes may also be given throughout the unit to assess content mastery. Test format will consist of multiple choice, matching, short answer, and essay questions. Quizzes have the same format, however are shorter in length.
Extra credit assignments will not be offered.
COURSE PROCEDURES
Lectures and Labs: Lectures will emphasize chemistry concepts. They are intended to help you become conversant with the language scientists use and the type of work that scientists do. Labs will familiarize you with skills needed to investigate scientific questions, allow you to establish effective research habits, and reinforce information learned during lecture. Communication is an important part of science, and clearly written lab reports are essential.
Scientific Literature: To make scientific progress, it is important for scientists to share information with each other and with the public both orally and in writing. You will be responsible for reading, summarizing, critiquing, discussing, and presenting information from scientific articles.

Mr. Preece
Dear Parent/Guardian:
I, Mr. Preece, wish to welcome you and your child. In the attached handbook, you will find the requirements and guidelines of this course. This will help to prepare your child for his/her studying of this challenging material. This handbook provides the necessary information your child needs to ensure success in science.
We are looking forward to an exciting and industrious year. Let’s work together to make it happen. If, at any time, you need to see me about your child’s progress, please do not hesitate to call me or your child’s guidance counselor to arrange an appointment. If your child is having difficulty in the course, he/she should see me to make an appointment.
I look forward to meeting you this Fall.
Sincerely,
Mr. Preece
Please read this handbook and sign this sheet.
Remove this page and return Mr. Preece.
We have carefully read the Science Handbook. As a student, I am aware of my responsibilities and the expectation I must fulfill to be successful in this science course.
