Below is a quickly approaching opportunity for students to gain practical experience in the field of Energy and Sustainability within Evanston.

The City of Evanston has announced that as a participant in the ComEd Community Energy Challenge (CEC), $350,000 in program incentives were set aside exclusively for Evanston businesses. The ComEd Smart Ideas for Your Business program offers prescriptive and custom incentives to facilitate the implementation of cost effective energy efficiency improvements for non-residential (commercial and industrial) customers. This funding is still available, but time is running out. If the reserved funding isn't spent shortly, the funds will be returned and reallocated to projects on ComEd's waiting list.At stake currently is $200,000 in yet-to-be-claimed grant funding.

The city is looking for student interns to help sign up new businesses in January and February. Note that required training dates fall during the first week back from break. We look forward to your participation!

Students can contact Carolyn Collopy, Sustainable Programs Coordinator for the City of Evanston at with questions, or to express interest.

Please see the project description below. Feel free to pass this info along to other Northwestern students.

City of Evanston Office of Sustainability Internship Opportunity

The City of Evanston is seeking 10 student interns for a business outreach project. As part of its Community Energy Challenge Plan, the City is

recruiting local businesses for participation in ComEd's Smart Ideas for Your Business program. ComEd's program pays business owners cash for

implementing a variety of electric energy saving measures. The City's Community Energy Challenge has set a goal to reduce energy use in the

business sector by 5 million kWh per year and is looking to leverage the ComEd program to help businesses reduce their energy use to meet this goal.

The internship will run from January 4th through February 12th. The number of hours will vary, students should be willing to commit between

10-15 hours per week to the project.

Interns will:

- Attend a mandatory training on either Tuesday, January 5th from 7-8:30 pm or Saturday, January 9th from 9-10:30 am at the Lorraine Morton Civic

Center, 2100 Ridge Ave.

- Visit local businesses and discuss the benefits of energy saving measuresand ComEd's incentive program

- Recruit 3-5 businesses for participation in the program, perform a basic energy audit and help the business owner fill out the ComEd program application

This is a great opportunity to gain practical experience in the sustainability sector, while helping the community save money and reduce its

greenhouse gas emissions. The positions are unpaid however, if credit is available through your university, the City is willing to verify participation.
