JOB TITLE:Youth Director

(Part time)

LOCATION:Belmont Synagogue

WORKING HOURS:Expected average of 5 hours per week/20 hours per month

2-3 Shabbat mornings per month and all Chagim

Occasional Sunday activities and outings

SALARY: £3,120 per annum - £12 per hour

REPORTS TO:Chairman with a designated mentor on the Board, and liaise and work in coordination with the Rabbi

  1. MAIN PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF JOB

To provide a range of religious, cultural and social activities for all the youth of our Synagogue, maximising participationand creating a welcoming, enjoyable and thriving centre both on Shabbat/Chagim.

Todevelop and inspire the youth of the community, to get involved in shul life by promoting Belmont Synagogue as a great place to be and researching, creating and implementingfun programmes that will both enthuse and assist in their personal growth and development of a strong Jewish identity.

  1. POSITION IN ORGANISATION
  • The Youth Workerwill be supported and monitored by the Executive of BelmontUnited Synagogue.
  • The Youth Director will work with Tribe to maximise the range of activities offered to Belmont Synagogue youth and will make every effort to encourage engagement of those youth with centrally-organised Tribe activities, attending events personally as and when possible, including international trips at the expense of Tribe Central, given sufficient local involvement.
  • The Youth Director will attend training provided by Tribe Central including the annual Engage Conference, when required by Tribe Central.

  1. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • To help organise and lead Shabbat morning youth programmes, including leadership of and participation ofreligious services(see Appendix 1 for further details).
  • To set up, arrange run and publicise after occasional Sunday afternoon activities (see Appendix 1 for further details).You will be expected to develop and manage these activities as required.
  • Ad hoc activities as requested and/or agreed.
  • To ensure that all the appropriate United Synagogue Health & Safety and Child Protection protocols are followed for all events held, either internally or externally of the Synagogue and all appropriate documentation is filed accordingly.
  1. GENERIC DUTIES
  • Committed to the aims of the United Synagogue and act as an ambassador for the organisation.
  • Comply with The United Synagogue’s policy and procedures and code of expectations.
  • Bring to the attention of senior staff any health and safety requirements, which become obvious.In the event of any immediate danger, to take the appropriate action to reduce risk to physical danger to employees, members, contractors, volunteers, children, parents, visitors or staff.
  • Work collaboratively with other colleagues across the organisation to ensure the United Synagogue can achieve its vision, mission and strategy.
  • Undertake appropriate training as requested by your line manager in conjunction with the Human Resources Department and be committed to own continuous professional development.
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Chief Executive or other designated senior staff/undertaking such other duties that occasionally fall within the purpose of the post.

  • Due of the nature of the work for which you are applying, this post is exempt from the provisions of Section 4(2) of the Rehabilitation Act, 1974, by virtue of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, 1974, (Exceptions) Order 1975.
  • Accordingly, a valid and current enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate (formerly CRB) that is satisfactory to the United Synagogue will be required. Please ensure that you complete the United Synagogue Application Form Part 2 appropriately.
  • This position is not open to members of the Belmont United Synagogue community due to potential conflicts of interest.

APPENDIX 1 – SERVICES/PROGRAMMES

2-3 Shabbat mornings per month and Yom Tov mornings - the Youth Workeris required to:

a)Encourage the youth (boys and girls) to attend and participate in the youth service

b)Encourage and arrange for boys to develop their skills in leining and davening, utilising support from members of the community

c)Encourage the girls to contribute to the youth service, within the boundaries of halacha

d)Support the youth in creating “full youth service” leining and dovening rotas

e)Lead the dovening if required, and to lein if and when required(if jobholder has the skills to do so)

f)Helporganise a Youth Kiddush

g)Welcome and help integrate all pre/post Bar and Bat mitzvah youth

h)Arrange guest speakers as and when possible

i)Prepare and give a d'var torah/lead a discussion/provide an explanatory or other type of service

j)Work with the Shul caretakers to ensure that the Youth rooms are set up as required and left in a suitably tidy fashion

k)Use a range of approaches to encourage attendance e.g. birthday celebrations, sponsored themed Kiddushim

Programmes

a)Use a range of communication methods available to enable Youth to be kept aware of what is available and to encourage engagement with the other Youth in the community (e.g. Facebook group, email, newsletter)

b)To ensure that all participants of any programmes and activities are made to feel welcome

c)To be creative with their own ideas for programmes and activities for the stimulation of the religious and cultural well-being of the youth. The Youth Worker would be required to organise the preparation of any premises being utilised, to leave tidy after events, and to undertake any ancillary matters in connection with the provision of services and activities

d)Programmes to be fun and inclusive

e)To ensure that the religious and cultural activities harmonise with the social activities

Proven experience of successfully working in a Youth and Community work setting on a full or part-time basis, running programmes / X
Experience ofworking successfully with both religious and non-religious and/or non-committed youth / X
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the creative ability to develop own ideas for programmes and activities / X
Knowledge and experience to give shiurim and lead discussions toa range of levels up to youth in the sixth form / X
Excellent planning and organising skills with the ability to balance a number of priorities / X
Excellent understanding of younger people’s issues / X
Proven experience as a proactive team member, contributing to the success of the wider team and organisational goals / X
A good understanding of the Jewish Community, Judaism and Jewish Values / X
Fully committed to the philosophy and practice of Orthodox Judaism / X
