WELCOME

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Belmont Intermediate School (BIS) for 2013 and present you with your ‘Student Guide’

As a student at BIS we want you to be the best you can be. This means that you strive for academic achievement, demonstrate high standards of behavior, take increased responsibility for your learning, be persistent and committed, be understanding and respect others.

As a school we will provide you with a range of quality academic, cultural and sporting experiences and we want you to ‘give things a go’ and make the most of these opportunities.

Here at BIS we encourage you to think about and be actively involved in your own learning. You will be asked by your teacher to set goals and evaluate your progress.

As a learner at BIS there are five competencies you will develop during your two years. These are:

Global Citizenship:Knowing about and relating to other people, the environment and the world.

Collaborative Learner:Knowing how to work with others to achieve a goal.

Self-Directed and

Reflective Learner:Knowing and thinking about your learning.

Effective Communicator:Knowing how to successfully interact with other people, to gather information and express your ideas effectively.

Adaptable Thinker:Knowing how to think in different ways to learn effectively and move forward to new challenges.

These competencies will help you become a confident learner who is able to take on new challenges.

As well as these competencies we have four values that are important to our way of life at BIS. They are what we think are important ways of behaving. At our school they are:

Respect Commitment Responsibility Aroha

We will talk about these at assemblies.

Throughout the year you will have the opportunity to come to my office to show me your work. I always look forward to this and enjoy meeting students and talking to them about their learning.

I hope that you have a challenging and enjoyable year.

BEHAVIOUR

At BIS, students have the right to learn and teachers the right to teach. Any behaviour that infringes these rights is not acceptable and is dealt with accordingly. The school has clear behaviour management plans that set out behaviour expectations and consequences for inappropriate behaviour. Our values of respect, responsibility, commitment and aroha guide the way we behave at BIS.

BIKES

It is compulsory to wear a helmet when riding your bike. Traffic is very dense on all roads leading to the school so the Principal or Associate Principals reserve the right to withdraw permission to cycle to school if any breaches of roadworthiness or the Road Code occur. Riding in the school grounds is prohibited. You must get off your bike at the gate and walk down the drive - do the reverse on your way home. Your bike is stored in the bike shed by the front entrance. You musthave a safety chain or padlock. The school will take all possible care of bikes but is not prepared to accept any responsibility for bikes left unlocked.

NB: Skateboards/Scooters are not permitted at school unless it is a pre-approved mufti and wheels day.

BISTECH TEAM

These are students who will help teachers and classes use ICT effectively. They will meet regularly with an Associate Principal.

BUSES

The school bus service is provided by Ritchies Bus Company, which determines both routes and fares. However, the school works in co-ordination with the Company to ensure that all students behave on the buses. Complaints from drivers are dealt with at school and parents are involved if any serious misdemeanors occur. The Company has the final say as to who will travel on its buses and the school reserves the right to suspend from travel any students whose behaviour is a threat to the safety of others.

Students line up on the concrete path above the car park on Winscombe Street nearest the Takapuna Grammar School driveway by Gate 1.

All classes are either Year 7 or Year 8. The school is divided into four houses corresponding to lighthouses (Brett, Cuvier, Pencarrow and Tiri). There is a mixture of students from each class in each house. In addition to the four houses there are 6 teaching and learning teams.

HOUSE COUNCILORS

Each house has 2 councilors who assist the house leader, are trained as peer mediators and support events around the school.
