Course Description:

Knowing how to use computer applications software is a basic skill for everyone. Students will have the opportunity to gain basic computer skills needed for future education or employment plans. Students in this course will be introduced to word processing (MS Word), desktop publishing (MS Publisher), spreadsheet (MS Excel), database (MS Access), and presentation (MS PowerPoint) applications. Students will receive training on equipment and software that is most commonly used in business today. All students will be expected to show proficient knowledge and skills in each area of this course.

A. Computer History, Components & Employability Skills

1.Explain and summarize the history of computers

2.Demonstrate knowledge of ethical and legal issues related to the use of computers

Instructional Strategies:

Course material will be presented through Teacher Lecture, Computer Lab Assignments, Induction Activities, Group and Individual Projects, Discussion, Guided and Independent Practice, Guest Speakers, Handouts, and Individual Presentations.

A copy of additional classroom procedures is being provided and should be kept on file with the course syllabus for reference purposes. Progress reports will be provided to students and parents during the term.

Note: Textbooks for this course will be provided and will not leave the classroom.

Make-up Work:

  • It is the responsibility of the student to request make-up work within five (5) days after an excused absence. (Work may not be turned in after an unexcused absence.)
  • Students are responsible for turning in all make-up within five (5) days of request.
  • Any work due on the day you are absent must be turned in when you return without prompting from the teacher. Check with the teacher for assignments upon your return.

Classroom Policies:

  • Respect teachers, students, and school property.
  • NO CELL PHONES on person in class. Anyone seen with a cell phone in class or if the phone rings/vibrates during school hours will be issued the consequence of a discipline referral.
  • NO GROOMING during class. Grooming includes, but is not limited to, brushing hair and applying makeup.
  • NO FOOD, DRINKS, GUM, or CANDY ALLOWED in Computer Lab.
  • Wait to be dismissed by me – you are not permitted to stand at the door prior to the dismissal bell.
  • Show respect and courtesy to all people. This includes using appropriate tone of voice and language. Arguing, inappropriate language, and talking back will not be tolerated.
  • Students will not be allowed to leave the classroom during teacher instruction time.
  • Please be respectful of others by listening attentively and staying on task.
  • Students are not permitted download files, use jump/flash drive, memory sticks, disks or CD’s in the lab.
  • You will be counted Tardy if you are not in the room when the bell rings.
  • Adhere to all Belleville High School rules. **See Student Handbook.
  • Consequences: 1st time – verbal warning.
    2nd time – Student/Teacher Conference and/or seat change
    3rd time – 30 minute teacher detention, phone call home

4th time – administrative referral

Detention:

Students serving detention must report to designated area at said time. Detentions, unless otherwise stated, will be held at 7:25 a.m. and will last 25 minutes. Failure to serve entire detention results in an automatic administrative referral.

Computer Lab Rules

Absolutely NO food, drinks, gum, or candy allowed in the computer lab.

  • Workstation use must be for an academic purposes only.
  • All computer activity and work by students and staff must adhere to copyright regulations, must comply with all software license agreements and must follow all policies outlined in the Internet User Acceptable Use Policy.
  • Students should always log off the network after using the computer.
  • Unless otherwise instructed, students should remain only in the specific software package selected by the teacher.
  • If a problem arises with a specific computer, please notify the teacher immediately.
  • Students are responsible for leaving computer areas neat and clean after use.
  • Students are responsible for textbooks and equipment used during class. Any equipment problems should be reported to the teacher immediately.

Keep in mind the following are Not Permitted

  • No food or drinks are allowed in the computer areas.
  • No Internet use without expressed permission and only the website directed.
  • No games may be installed
  • No Instant Messaging or online chatting allowed
  • No email use by any student
  • No software installation or deletion or program downloads
  • No music or MP 3 downloading, not even legal music and MP3 downloading
  • CDs may NOT be brought into or taken out of the lab without approval.
  • Do not change the Windows default settings unless instructed to do so by the teacher.
  • No "burning" of music CD's of any kind using school computers
  • No posting to message boards
  • No changing of computer configuration settings
  • No listening to radio stations through the network

This syllabus is subject to change if the instructor feels the change will be to the advantage of the students.

BUSINESS EDUCATION STUDENT ORGANIZATION -- FBLA

Business Education students are expected to join FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). FBLA is a national educational student organization that plays a vital role in the student’s high school education. FBLA is an excellent source of information for students planning careers in business. Students may be members of the collegiate level of FBLA which is PBL (Phi Beta Lambda).

FBLAis a national student organization that strives to:

Strengthen the confidence of students in themselves and their work

Create more interest in and understanding of American business enterprise

Develop character, prepare for useful citizenship, and foster patriotism

Encourage scholarship and promote school loyalty

Assist students in the establishment of occupational goals

Facilitate the transition from school to work

Students in FBLA are given the opportunity to develop strong leadership qualities and civic responsibilities through participation in competitive events and projects. Members of FBLA may apply for the many scholarships that are available. FBLA conferences allow members to meet some of the more than 250,000 members.
