Syllabus

This program is very individualized, as each student will come with different skill levels. This is a beginner swim class and will focus on water adjustment skills, water safety and the fundamental skills of swimming. Attendance is Mandatory. If 2 classes are missed your grade will be lowered 1 full grade. If 1 class is missed, you may hand in a 1 page paper on a topic I assign.

Day 1

Introductions, self-assessment and goals will be reviewed. A tour of the pool, a review of swim levels and classexpectations will be discussed. The 12 minute Cooper test will be administered.

Day 2 & 3

View “Swimming & Diving Skills”, Front Crawl & Backstroke segment. Discuss the assignments handed out on the first day of class. Work in the water. 100 swim & 1 minute treading water

Day 4 & 5

View “Swimming & Diving Skills”, Breaststroke & Butterfly segment. Discuss the mechanics of the stroke and practice in water. Review skills in water. 200 swim & 2 minute treading water

Day 6 & 7

View “Swimming & Diving Skills”, Sidestroke & Elementary Backstroke segment. Discuss the mechanics of the stroke and practice in water. Review skills in water. 300 swim & 3 minute treading water

Day 8 & 9

View “Swimming & Diving Skills”, Flip turns & touch turns segment. Discuss the mechanics of the stroke and practice in water. Review skills in water. 350 swim & 4 minute treading water

Day 10 & 11

View “Swimming & Diving Skills”, Breaststroke & Butterfly segment. Discuss the mechanics of the stroke and practice in water. Review skills in water. 350 swim & 5 minute treading water

Day 12

Meet with a water aerobic instructor & participate in a shallow water aerobic class. This will be in both deep and shallow water. Review skills in water. 350 swim & 6 minute treading water

Day 13 & 14

View “Swimming & Diving Skills”, Diving & starts and turns segment. Discuss the mechanics of the dives and starts. Work in the water. 350 swim & 6 minute treading water

Day 15 & 16

Work on endurance, treading water and water games. The last day we will again swim the 12 Cooper test to determine how much we’ve improved.

General Directions for Instructors

Use of this Form

This form is intended to be used only for those courses listed on the form. Other courses must be reported on a Course Record (F6418R) and Course Record Addendum (F6418AR) or appropriate Course Record or Activity Report designed for that program. The form can be accepted by fax, e-mail or regular mail. This form is to be completed within 10 working days of course completion, or as pre-arranged with the Chapter.
